dome temp gauge

I have a Med BGE. When I raise the grill level to get a roast or chicken up higher in the dome it sometimes hits the dome thermometer. So, I pull the thermometer out a ways. How far can I pull it out and still get an accurate reading? I imagine the tip is the sensitive part of the gauge but does that length of probe sticking out the top of the ceramic interfere with the reading. Thanks
