Travelling with BGE
field hand
Posts: 420
We have a XL at home and love it. We have a 5th wheel and spend a month or so in the south during the winter. Looking at the possiblity of buying a smaller BGE to take with us. I'm sure some of you travel with an egg, would appreciate hearing about your experiences and what has worked for you. Packing to prevent breakage? Thanks in advance.

i built a cradle out of stainless for my large, many here have made one similar out of wood for the small. the only thing o do for packing is slip some corrugated cardboard between the base and dome

Thanks for the info. Will check into cradle designs if we buy a smaller egg. Our storage belly are is about 2 ft high, no problem with width or depth, do you remove the lid and the internal parts or transport assembled with padding between the parts?

I have a small that we take camping all of the time. I built the carrier that fishless has the link to in the above post (from wessb's site). I have not bothered with padding or cleaning out the egg, just put the egg in the transporter and put the whole thing in the camper's garage and away we go. I have also taken my medium (sp) by wedging the egg in the corner of the garage... no problems.
Nothing like a good egged meal while camping!!!

Thanks, you guys are making this sound more do able. Over the course of the month, we would use it a lot. I was thinking of disassembling the egg, easier to handle, and making storage/cradles for the various pieces, want the egg to arrive intact. The ride in the belly of the 5th can get bouncy. We don't travel all that far, around 900 miles. Thanks again.
