Steam Cleaning a Grid Followup
Spring Chicken
Posts: 10,255
A couple of days ago I asked if anyone had ever cleaned their cooking grid using steam, like those steam cleaning devices you see advertised on TV. Here's the original post:

Well, my neighbor and fellow Egghead, has one of the hand-held steam cleaning devices and loaned it to me.
I first tried it on an old porcelain grid that had some grease buildup and even some rust. The steam cleaned a few bits of grease off but nothing else.
So I tried cleaning the grease off the deep sink where the grid touched the sink wall. Didn't clean that either.
So I have answered my own question. It doesn't work.
Now we know.

Greetings,
I think that has a lot to do with the unit being used. I have used steam that would peel paint. The hand held units sure do look good and effective on the infomercials late at night! -
Everyone trys to build a better mouse trap. The best thig for clean up of the grill is to make sure EVERY spot on it is coated with spray/oil. I even take my fingers and rub it in.

I tried the 'burn' approach a few times but was not all that pleased with the results. It seems to work pretty well if I place a baking stone over the grid to concentrate the heat more. Even then there is a goodly amount of grease accumulation left on the outter ring and around most weld joints.
I've even tried using my Mapp Torch to see if direct heat would help. Didn't...
I'll keep trying.

That's good for a while but then the crud starts to build up anyway. Plus, I kinda don't like the flavor it imparts to the cook.

Yea, bigger and more powerful would probably work better but I wanted to see if the $39.95 type would do the job. So I just held it there in the same spot longer thinking more time would offset the less power. Didn't help.
This whole thing is just to see if there is an inexpensive and easy way to clean grids. I'm pretty happy with just brushing them immediately after a cook.

Sorry for the delay. Been more involved than a one legged man in a butt kick'n contest.
Kind of been one of those days
Got your email. I need to pick up one ingredient and a titch of reformulations then on the way to you. I will 'e' a response to your email sometime tomorrow.

Ever try taking them to the car wash? Spray the de-greaser on them...out of the wand...let sit a min. or so, then hit them with a full blast from said wand. Works for me.
