I'm totally confussed....
Last night in a post I mentioned that I had pulled my temp gauge out of the dome to calibrate it and had forgotten to remove the clip from the stem. It therefore fell into the fire and I tossed it away before I realized what it was.[p]I got a reply from "James". It read..."Are you putting the clip under the dome?"[p]I am, James, and I am now wondering where you put yours to hold your gauge to the dome. I don't see how it would work outside the dome and I know it would look ugly as hell. [p]So James, if you read this please let me know. Honestly, I have thought about this all day and its driving me crazy![p]Hugh Jass[p][p]

Hugh Jass,
You don't need to hold the thermometer in as it will stay in place quite nicely without the clip. So, some people place the clip on the outside to keep the thermometer from going all the way in and possibly poking the meat in some setups. When the clip is on the outside, it isn't holding the thermometer in, it is holding it out, if you will....

The Naked Whiz, ok, I stand corrected....all day I was thinking James was crazy as hell!![p]Hugh Jass[p]ps....but I bet it is ugly, ain't it????

Hugh Jass,
Not if you look at it from just the right angle and can't see it! LOL![p]TNW

Hugh Jass,[p]A lot of cool people use Polder type thermometers to measure temps at the grill level. Even cooler people use fancier tools such as the BBQ Guru.[p]I am decidedly not cool, so I usually just use the dome thermometer sans clip, or no thermometer at all when grilling.[p]Pax,

Hugh Jass,[p]When I was using the BGE thermometers I didnt use the clip. It stays in place just fine without it. I now have Tel-Trus that have longer stems and I place the clip on the outside keeping the stem from hitting any roast etc inside.[p]You really dont need the clip.

Hugh Jass,
I started putting the clip on the outside when the earlier thermometers had a plastic face, this helped to make sure it didnt warp or melt. I now put it on the outside for the same reason others have mentioned...it`s much easier to pull it out to avoid a large piece of meat....and in reality, you never needed it on the inside anyway, the only way the thermeometer could possibly fall out of the dome would be if the dome was upside down....[p]Wess

Hugh Jass,[p]While the folks below all have great points about why "NOT" to use those clips on the dome thermo, they are missing a very important reason to avoid them. When the clip is used it usually holds the thermo tightly against the dome. Then if you or a guest should notice that the dial is not perfectly centered and turn it to make it centered to your liking, you have just ruined the calibration. Your guest could do it and you not even know it and your next meal is done in half the time! [p]When you open you cooker, find the manual and the dome thermo clip and toss both away. [p]I now use a dome thermo that is 2 inches shorter so poking food does not come into play anymore for me.[p]

Hugh Jass, ok, I apologize to everyone! I now see that I am on the ONLY one that read the manual when I installed my gauge and put it on the INSIDE of the dome like the instructions said!![p]Seriously, I'm glad everyone says I don't need the clip because it got dumped out with the trash. I just never thought about using it on the outside of the dome. [p]I have ordered a new Tel-True gauge so if it comes with a clip I will get rid of it quickly before I make a fool out of myself again![p]Thanks guys,
Van
