grease seeping through ceramic???

My egg on the top lid looks like some grease or something is bleeding through the ceramic. It is brownish in color and has a sticky feel too it. It kinda looks like it is beading up on the surface. Is this grease or what? Should I be concerned?

  • It's normal & nothing to worry about. It usually happens when the egg hasn't been used in awhile and draws damp. The ceramic is porous and as it gets hot, it starts pushing/steaming the moisture out which includes soot and grease. When it looks like it's about stopped seeping and while the egg is still hot, carefully wipe off with a terry rag or something similar. It's tougher to clean when the egg is cold.

  • Thanks for the info, That makes me feel alot better.
Just had me worried about my egg.
  • I had the same thing happen to my large after a series of heavy storms to hit here (Central Coast of Calif). While the Egg was hot, I wiped the sweat off the outside of the dome with paper towels. After the Egg had cooked I wiped the outside of the dome with warm soapy water then rinsed with clear water. Cleaned it right up. :)
