Stupid question #1

Unknown
edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
Got my large BGE last Saturday, love it so far, just need to learn not to cook things too long. Question is: the thermometer that comes with it, that you put in the top dome, says to slid the "clip" off, insert it, then slide the "clip" back on. The only thing that was on it was a little plastic sleeve. Is this the "clip"?

  • FlaGal,
Nooooooo, that plastic sleeve wouldn't last too long, and would probably smell bad. There should be a metal spring clip that came with (or near) the thermometer. If you don't have one or have misplaced it, don't worry about it, most people dont use it anyway- your thermometer isn't going anywhere.

  • FlaGal,[p]As WailingAngus said just throw that thing in your BBQ cabinet or whatever... Your thermomoeter isn'tgoing to fly off without it and you never know when you might just want to pull that sucker out to calibrate it.... [p]Brin[p]

FlaGal,[p]Congratulations on the new egg. Is the husband over the gas thing yet?
I'll be cooking on the egg at "All About Grills" from 11:00 til 2:00 this Saturday at 1200 Starkey in Largo, FL. Come on by and say hi.

<p />WailingAngusBeef,[p]Thanks, that's what I thought. Now all I have to do is learn not to overcook stuff. Here's my poor overdone ribs:[p]

    FlaGal,
First of all, there are no "Stupid questions" here on the Forum. Just about everything regarding ceramic cooking is new and different, even to experienced BBQers. [p]Second, Welcome to the Big Green Egg Forum, a place you will truly grow to appreciate in the weeks and months and years to come. Ask your questions freely and you will get answers to any question.[p]Now to your question... No, the little clip is a metal device that slips onto the themometer shaft inside the dome to hold it snuggly in place. Otherwise it would turn freely and look tacky. (We Eggheads like things to be snug). There should have been a clip with your themometer unless you got an off brand. Plastic would melt.[p]You may want to calibrate your themometer using boiling water before you put it on your Egg. That will help assure you of the right temperature for various cooks you will be doing. There should be an adjustment nut on the back of the themometer. Simply adjust it until the needle points to 212° when you place the point in boiling water. It's best to take it out of the water and tweak it until it reads 212°. You may want to do that a few times a year just to be safe. [p]Others will jump in pretty soon to congratulate you on a wise purchase and answer your question.[p]Good Egging to you[p]Spring Chicken

  • drbbq,[p]yes, he is WAY over the gas grill, wanted to haul it out to the road right away. I think his favorite part is that I can light the BGE myself and do all the cooking too. :)

    FlaGal,
Congratulations on your new toy. You've found the most important tool you can get for you BGE - this forum. A lot of great advice from people who have just about done it all. All you have to do is ask and usually within minutes you will have an answer or some advice on how to do it.
I know the feeling about the husband that wants me to do all the cooking. He won't even turn over the meat. That's O.K., that way we have what I want and the way I want it. Our new gas grill went to his mother's house the week after we got our BGE and they are now responsible for buying all the replacement parts and wanting a BGE for themselves.

FlaGal, Being a new Egger, one thing most important.. No long hair dangling while opening a Egg at near high temp situations. Of course if you prefer the burnt hair look, just be careful.

  • Thanks to all for your help, comments and nice welcome. I'm sure I will be around alot with questions and posts regarding my BGE projects. It really is fun; trying to decide what to try this weekend, maybe some jerk chicken or a Spanek chicken, or ......

    Julie,
Same thing at our house. I'm the EggMeister, and Jim just loves it that way. He's really quick to buy any tools/toys for Egg cooking, which obviously suits me just fine.
    Cheers,
