What you may be getting is just the VOC taste. The only two times I have ever tasted anything close to lighter fluid taste is once when I put some breaded(already cooked) chicken fingers on a top rack to reheat while I was grilling some wings......the fire kept flaming and smoking from the wings.....and the breading on the fingers tasted HORRIBLE(and it was wrapped tightly in foil too). The other time was when I had wrapped my platesetter in foil, and the foil caught fire and really got some nasty smoke going.....
One other thing is if you aren't getting the fire burning clean before you put the food on....then you are getting the VOC taste from the lump.
Hope that helps.
