Large vs. medium size egg

I need some help from you experts. I'm torn with whether to purchase the large or medium green egg. I currently have the weber 18 1/2 unit and the grid is comparably sized to the large. However,it's a lot more money and there are only four of us in our family, 3 of which eat pretty light. I have two questions: 1. What can I not do with a medium that I can with a large? 2. I noticed the ceramic lining of the medium unit is a thinner than than the large. Any performance issues to think about as a result in terms of maintaining consistency of heat,etc that I should think about between the two?[p]Thanks

    I own a large and a small, so that qualifies me to talk about the medium. :-)[p]The standard advice: Buy the largest size you can afford. You will thank yourself in the long run. There may come a time when you want to cook for friends or a party or something like I did, do pulled pork for 60 women in a homeless shelter.[p]That said, there is almost nothing, if anything, that you can do with a large that you cannot do with a medium. I don't understand your comment about the ceramic on the medium being thinner than on the large. Is it really? I've never noticed it, so if it is, it is negligible. No one here has ever commented that their medium just won't cook as long or as hot as a large because of the thinner walls. [p]So, my advice is this: buy the large if you think you can afford it. If not, you will be just as pleased with a medium as you would be with a large. You should have no qualms whatsoever about getting the medium vs. the large execept for the loss of the additional size. When this question comes up, the medium owners are just as fanatical about their eggs as the large owners. [p]TNW

    Everyone will tell you to get the large if it's in your budget.
    Now saying this, GFW has cooked with his medium forever and has cooked everything that can be done on a large on his medium except maybe in volume.

    bartman, I own a medium and a large and I got my medium first. That may give you a clue. You can pretty much cook everything you want on a medium but I cook 65% of the time on the large, 25% of the time on my mini and only about 10% of the time on the medium. One I got the large I found that if it's too big fo rthe mini, it's not too small for the large. However, if budget limits you to the medium, go for it. I would rather have a medium with platesetter and pizza stone than a large without either. And besides, after a while, you will be so impressed with BGE cooking that you will never think of budgetary limits when you purchase your second. :-)
