My husband showed me this article in his Business Journal. I am really glad to see this and I will be buying my salmon from them in the future.

Target Says "No" to Farm Raised Salmon

Target Corp. on Tuesday said it has eliminated farmed salmon from its stores, instead selling only wild-caught Alaskan salmon.

The shift, which applies to fresh, frozen and smoked seafood offerings at its stores across the country, includes Target owned brands such as Archer Farms and Market Pantry.

Sushi carried in its stores will be switched to wild-caught salmon by year’s end. Target has six Birmingham-area locations.

Environmentalists have criticized salmon farming, complaining that it pollutes water supplies and damages natural habitats. Farmed salmon are also prone to disease — which are fought through antibiotics, but can still cause outbreaks when infected farm fish escape and spread the disease to wild fish.

Target (NYSE: TGT) consulted with the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, Calif., on a better option, and decided to go with wild-caught salmon from Alaska, which is certified as sustainable to the standard of the Marine Stewardship Council.

“Target’s decision to source sustainable wild-caught salmon, instead of farmed, will have a real impact in the marketplace — and ultimately, on the health of our oceans,” Julie Packard, the Monterey aquarium’s executive director, said in a statement.

Greenpeace, which publishes a ranking of big supermarket chains who use sustainable fishing practices, also praised the move. On its most recent list, published in 2009, Target ranked No. 4, behind Wegmans, Ahold USA and Whole Foods.

Food and grocery items have become more important to Target, which is working to expand its “P-Fresh” grocery concept to hundreds of its stores around the country.

Hoss, to be honest I've never thought of buying groceries at Tartet either. I'm curious as to what they will be selling it for. Most of the farm raised is around $6.99/lb.

Do you guys have the Super Targets? Huge grocery department. I've never bought any meat or seafood there, but often times the dry goods and household staples are cheaper than you can get anywhere else...wally world included.

Thanks Rod, didn't know that. I'll have to check it out. I'd rather patronize Target than WM.
  • We have a Super Target a couple of blocks from the Chicken Ranch. I like shopping there. For one thing it's convenient, but also their prices tend to be lower on the items we routinely buy and I don't have to go elsewhere to buy casual clothing, curtain rods, wine, etc. I also find that their store brand foods are as good if not better than name brands, and considerably cheaper.

During my last survey (yesterday) I said the only thing I wish they had was a butcher for fresh cut meat. Other than that I have no complaints at all.

Now you tell me they are switching to Alaskan Salmon. I will buy some the next time I shop there.

    Thanks for the heads up.

    Anne,

Until I read your post which piqued my interest I didn't know Target sold food other than snacks - at least in these parts it's just a glorified department store. So I did some research. It appears that food is available at their 200+ Super Targets only. Those are most all found in the states of TX, FL, MN and CO.

hmmmmmm - no I haven't, Anne. OTOH we are having some MEGA super thingee moving in here in our 112K population Peoria location with a 325K SMSA. We already are over run with several "mega" Krogers, we have a Schnucks (out of St. Louis) going through a MAJOR rehab, a CUBS from Chicago that's ok..but, and a HUGE Hi-Vee which is new to our market. We're still wondering what is going in!

  • Thanks Anne!!!
I try to buy "wild", but the last time I did... (it was from W-M) the package said "Wild Caught", but I found product of China on it.
    Makes me wonder ??
I love Target! We don't have a "Super", but it is large and does have a good sized grocery section.
Good stuff at a good price!
  • Yes, you have to watch the label. I won't buy farm raised salmon either, but some of the wild stuff is from China, which I have bought by mistake, and frankly it wasn't very good quality. It is difficult to find good Alaskan wild salmon that doesn't come in a can. I do try and avoid any Chinese product and look for the USA goods.

I definitely will be looking for that on the packages I purchase. I would never buy any fish that origanates from China. Thanks for that info.
  • They are in NC also. My wife buys us lovely little things from the Super Target.
