Hornhonk..thermometer concerns

If there is any resistance when turning the dome thermometer..ie. the stem is gunked or the hole is to tight...then yes you would be changing the calibration. That is in fact what calibrating is..locking the stem and turning the dial...so if the stem is stuck or sticky, you would be turning the dial...I have some that are very tight, which is why I personally dont tell others to put desired temp at 12 o clock....hope this made sense..

If I turn my thermometer in the hole...I can't trust the calibration so I don't turn it in the hole. Tim
  • although if you look closely at it while you are turning it, you will see it go out of calibration.

my thermometer is bent, so i don't use the spring clip. when it rests flush against the domes, it spins freely. i spin the thermometer so the desired temp is at 12 o'clock, then pull the thermometer outward until the kink lodges in the drilled hole. kind of odd, and i don't recommend anyone bending the thermo just to do this

I took the clip off both mine, or rather I never put them back on after removing therm to test in boiling water.

All of the clips on mine are on the outside of the egg...still for the life of me can find no reason for it to be on the inside..

Personally I don't have a problem recognizing 250° at 10 oclock..400° at 12 oclock...500&deg at 1....you get the idea, and also at a glance...guess different folks have different situations..but leavin it "normal" works for me...
  • how foolish of you to think it can be calibrated (heh heh heh)

i had my spring clip off for a while but the sucker freewheeled. i bent the stem while shutting it on a mess of pork butt. thankfully it still works, and the kink actually serves to keep the thing from spinning. effed up way to solve a problem, but what the heck...

Putting the clip on the outside, in affect changes the stem length. Does that not change the temp differential from grid to dome reading? I'm not saying it does, just curious. I know several eggers that do it.
  • well, i think these things start out with an idea from the manufacturer, and then the users just go nuts and modify things. lookit the gasket. started out as a cushion, then it was realized it served as a fairly air-tight thing (to allow low and slow control of temps), so it becomes a "necessity". later users start taking the thing to extend high temps for pizzas, Trex-ing etc. and suddenly a weakness crops up that wasn't there before. bing. out comes the nomex gasket.

the spring clip seems like a logical thing, but maybe when they developed it all users weren't loading 6 pork butts on there

I honestly have no idea, because I have always from day 1 put the clip on the outside..originally it was to provide some distance between the dial and the egg..as way back when I got my first egg the dials used to have a plastic face..without a spacer there were a few that got melted or at least warped...
