Best Idea for sealing my newly purchased cypress BGE Tables
Chris
Posts: 148
Alright, let me start by saying that the BGE Store and its staff is unbelievable!!!!! It was the only place in the world I would buy way too much stuff and not be regretting it when I went out the door! I ended up with all kinds of racks, pans, chips, new bands, etc and even bought a BGE Table for my Large Egg and one for my small. A little overboard I know, but I had to get a nice home for them to rest in on our new deck and wanted the ability to move them around seperately.[p]This leads me to my question. I was instructed that if you are going to cover the egg and table, you must seal the Cypress wood to prevent mold growth. I do not want to paint as the wood looks incredible, thus I am needing some advice as to the best clear coats sealer to use. I just can't stand the thought of my babies being out in the elements and not covered (otherwise I would just let the table turn to its grey state). Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Once again, I love the board and am taking vigorous notes from all you professionals along the way![p]THANKS!!!!

Chris,
I used Minwax Helmsman Spar Varnish on my tables. It seems to hold up pretty well, but you still need to keep it covered if it is going to be wet a lot as mildew seems to be able to get into it and discolor it.[p]TNW

Chris, I have used both Thompson Water Seal and Olympic Sealing Stains with good results. [p]CB[p]

Chris, Get some terps and boilrd linseed oil. Mix 50/50 an apply. Do this daily for a period of time and the whenever needed.

josie,
Thanks to all for your help!!![p]Josie:[p]I am a novice here and am a little unsure of what you are referring to as to the two solutions that need to be mixed. I assume it is Linsead oil and something else. Thanks for the help![p]Chris

josie, reminds me of an old gunsmith saying about putting this mixture on gunstocks:[p]Once a day for a week..[p]Once a week for a year..[p]Once a year forever...[p]

Chris,
Two coats of Thompson's twice a year. Varnish and other coatings peel and need too much attention.[p]For myself, take two Tylenol and go to bed,
Doug
