Maverick ET-73

Where is the best place with the best price to buy one of these? I think I have damaged my last probe cable and my unit is a cheapy that is not really worth the effort trying to find a new probe to replace it with. Everone seems to like the Maverick so I may as well pony up the bucks and get one. The only thing that I am concerned with is can the probes be replaced for it easily if I burn them up as well?

I just googled 'et-73' and found this at amazon. Best price I have ever seen. Check shipping though there were a lot of hits. I paid $40 + shp.

I got mine on Amazon last week, very happy with price, free shipping and quick delivery.

Don't expect the Maverick to be any better than a "cheapie".

I love my Maverick and haven't had a problem with it in the nearly 4 years I've had it, but I have heard from others who have had nothing but problems. I've found that everyone who owns them either loves them or hates them. Nothing in between.
One thing I do is wrap the cables with foil where they will be exposed to heat. Whether or not it actually helps anything, I don't know, but it certainly can't hurt. -
Mine went in the trash over a year ago.

Mine went in the trash the second time I tried to use it. -RP

have you used it yet? I see some folks are very unhappy with it...

Why is that RB?

It is the probes that are giving me a fit! I am on my third pair and I am hoping the ones for the Maverick work better!
-
WOW! What kind of problem did you have with it?

what happened? I really want to know.

Shortly after I received my ET73, I found out here on the Forum that alot of folks where having probs with them. Some related to fried probe wires and some due to the electronics. Mine worked great for a few months. I didnt foil wrap the wires but I did always make sure there were above a plate setter leg as opposed to exposed to direct heat, especially on hotter cooks. I always monitored the grid temp and internal temp of the meat. Once it started it's inevitable malfunctioning I was here on the forum expressing my displeasure when one of the esteem elder members commented something to the effect of "why are you going through all that trouble anyway. You have the BGE dome thermometer and a thermapen, to hell with all the rest". I tossed the POS in the trash and haven't been happier. I think there is a tendancy to over complicate what we are doing here. Grilling/Smoking is not particularly difficult, especially with a Big Green Egg. We should concentrate on perfecting our cooks by trial and error on temps, preparation methods, flavoring, etc. instead of tinkering with unnecessary toys that do little to improve the food that comes off the Egg.
All IMO of course.....

I hate to butt in but I'm in the same boat. I want to purchase a wireless dual probe thermometer. I have not ever had one and wanting to make the investment. Is there one thermometer that is far above the rest?
-
Well your opinon is important to me. I didn't buy the Tru Tel Therm at your suggestion to calibrate my BGE therm and try it for a while and see what happens. Perfect advice! It still works 100% and we just spot checked it this weekend and it is still dead perfect. Money saved! My only real desire for a meat thermometer is I don't want to stick a prime rib repeatedly because I am afraid of letting the juice run out. I loved my first prime rib and it went 140. I am doing one today for my just my honey and I and it will have to go 150. I want it to be nice. I am thinking I will go with your first advice and just see if I can find a probe quickly today for one of my two existing therms. If not, I may just buy another $10 one and use that. They are readily available and rather cheap. However this time I will wrap the probes.

I know what you mean. I am a little disappointed because I thought I had found the perfect therm.

Well thanks. I dont profess to be an expert with anything about the BGE, except maybe EATING the food cooked on it. I am certainly not an expert steak cook, but does alot of juice really come out of the hole? Could one use a toothpic or a cutoff piece of bamboo skewer to plug the hole?
