I'm in the middle of a kitchen addition at my place and had to call upon my eggsperience for a challenging task at hand. I hadn't dug the footings for the ODK roof supports. So (2) 42" deep 12" wide holes must be dig today and poured with concrete. We have around 36" of frost (frozen ground) this time of year and dirt just doesn't chip or chop so good.

This is a cement type board

This method worked like a charm. Turned my nice black dirt into warm butta.

The ODK roof will be extending another 10 feet from the new back wall.

That is challenging. Did you have to start your hole with burning lump and work your way down 42 inches? I proclaim you da man! I guess you could do a steak caveman style while you wait or even a baked potato. :woohoo: How much dirt are you able to remove each time? Tim
-
I'm surprised you didn't through a butt in on top Adam. Thanks for explaining "frost", I never would have guessed! We don't have anything like that around these parts.
Good job, Good idea, Glad it worked.
Was that Wicked Good or Royal Oak?

Seeing all that smoke coming from the ground, I bet the neighbors thought the Minnesota volcano had finally erupted.

That won't happen till I get to town Tim. :silly:

No doubt! Shouldn't Adam be warning the authorities?
-
Thinking outside of the box.......oops, I mean egg, Adam?

First step was a 12 dia hole about 10" deep. Bout killed my arms. Used a 5' long, very heavy chisel. Then one load of lump for 12 hrs and dig 2 feet. Then another load a lump and am bout to finish them both. Pour later today.
Gotta love the lump
-
The left over little bits of both kinds. You so smaht
-
 That one took you a while
-
You likey?
I cooked some burgers on the small for the carpentry help I had. Really shoulda just put a grate on the hole and made this thread more on topic.
-
Tim,
The damn grass is turning green around the holes.
Guys charge huge money to come and thaw ground for a person. -
I'll give you a test run anyplace in the backyard you like. We'll see how long it takes you to make a 10" deep 12" wide hole.
-
I think your a genius and very ambitious and, I know you need it done. Good going. Tim
-
Thanks Tim.
Your a very kind man.
-
You are a genius.
I would have sold the house and moved somewhere warmer.
That was inspired, good luck with the rest of the project. And you used some lump so this is on topic (at least to me). -
OK Adam, as long as it's MY backyard!!! I won't even use a MAPP torch.
You win, I don't even own a shovel. If I did I'd probably have to find a use for it and that ain't gonna happen any time soon.
Is that permafrost?
