I don't know if I'll use fire starters or oil soaked paper towels again. Wow does that get the process going quick.

Don't know why it took me so long to try, I had the bottle and the automatic starter sitting in the shop all this time.

I have a propane weedburner and was too lazy to walk off the deck in the snow to get it off the large, and use oil and ptowels to light the mini last night. Still works like a charm, but I love that torch!

I love mine as well. It's really nice when you don't have the time to wait on the temp. I can hit my medium with it in a spot about 12 inches in diameter and have that puppy at 600 in about 12 minutes flat!

I am relatively new to egg cult, but I came to the MAPP quickly in my ever continuing learning curve, but for me it is the only way to go.

I recently purchased a torch and discovered that you cannot buy MAPP any more at Home Depot. Evidently, MAPP has gotten so expensive because it is used for high end welding that they do not sell it.

The yellow bottles are no longer MAPP. They are polypropelene gas, which is a souped up form of propane (as is MAPP). I guess the new stuff burns almost as hot as MAPP and is still reasonably priced. If you want to read up on it and do comparisons, check out the burnzomatic site.

My torch with the polypropelene works very well. I do like the idea of a spark shield since I now have little burn dots all over my hand. :(

I am on a learning curve with the torch. I am not sure how long I need to hold it in one place. I fear that I may be holding it still for too long and wasting gas. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dont worry about wasting gas , the bottles are only a couple dollars each . It has taken me 4 months to empty my first bottle and I use my egg daily .

We used mapp for a while but have switched to propane; we felt the mapp, which does burn alot hotter, was causing too much sparking. Propane takes just seconds longer but it feels a little safer. Never used any other methods.

I'm now a convert...
2 days ago, I picked up a weed burner torch from our local Harbor Freight Tool store.
(cheap Asian import tools)for $14.00 on sale.
(6' hose, and a 36" wand.)

Lots of sparks but had my large up to temp in record time, I was very impressed.


Going to try dome closed and the wand down the top hole next time, to contain sparks.
