New Daisy Wheel

Unknown
edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
Just bought a new large BGE and have a question about the daisy wheel. Is it necessary to season it like other cast iron to prevent rust? Also, new, the wheels are loose and will change the setting any time the lid is opened. Is it supposed to be this loose, or should I just tighten the screws?

Winddreamer, your first low and slow will seasonit, but if you want you can season it yourself. as for the slid opening and closing when you open the egg, you can fix this by how you place the daisy on the egg. the slide screw should be facing forward toward the handle of the egg when you put it on so that when you open the egg it doesnt slide, but just hangs there. experiment by turning the whole thing and you will see what i mean when you open the egg at various positions of the screw with relation to the dome handle.

    Winddreamer,
I've had my large egg for about a month and did not season the daisy wheel and so far no problems. I've read where some just spray WD40 on the pivot if necessary. I haven't read much on seasoning this part so we'll see if I screwed up by not doing so.
Good Egging, this site is full of info.

  • Winddreamer,
Good morning, and congrats on the new Egg. I see you have answers already on seasoning the Vent. I would not tighten the screws. After a few Lo n Slows you will find that the entire vent starts to gunk up if you don't burn it off. The slots will start accumalating the smoke and grease from the fire. This is normal. After the cook I shut my lower vent and replace the daisy wheel with the ceramic cap and put the wheel inside the egg on the grate above the fire and I have not had another problem.

Winddreamer, actually a longer bolt, two washers and a compression spring that fits over the bolt (and between the two washers) works well. Tighten it down just enough to put some pressur eon the spring. It will provide enough pressure to hold the slide top in place but it will still be easily adjusted. I've done two of mine and they work well.
