Need help fast with beer butt chicken!!!
Smokey Bandit
Posts: 12
Hello![p]I decided to smoke 2 whole birds today using GFW's beer butt chicken recipe. It sure looks like it is going to be delicious, but I am wondering how I am going to pull the birds off of the egg once they are done. I can't figure out how I am going to do this without burning myself or spilling the remaining beer from the can that is stuffed in the birds. Does anyone have any ideas? I was thinking about using Aluminum foil to grasp the bird and put directly on a roasting pan...

SmokeyBandit, I just use a metal spatula and with a gloved left hand hold the top of the bird to stablize it while I slip the spatula under the beer can and lift it off in tact.

SmokeyBandit,[p]Do have old oven gloves?

BGE Pit Crew,[p]No. :(

RRP,[p]That is a great idea. I will have to find a substitute for an oven glove. I may just wrap my hand in foil. Haha.

SmokeyBandit,
gloves aren't even needed - it's no big deal about what to use - a fork , a pencil, a spoon all you're doing is stablizing the top while you slip the spatula under the bottom to prevent knocking the bird over and splilling the contents.

SmokeyBandit,
I hold the can with a heave duty glove and use my tongs to pull the chicken off the can, put the bird on a plate at the egg and later discard the can. Many ways to do it.[p]Good Luck,

SmokeyBandit,[p]I use two pair of medium length stainless steel tongs. I use these for everything on the egg. Grill lifter, flip steaks, flip burgers (yes burgers), remove brisketts. Everything. You just have to make sure that you get the heavy duty grade tongs, and not the crappy ones they sell in most supermarkets. I buy mine at the resaurant supply store.[p]I couldn't think of grilling without them. GoodGrips also makes some tongs that use the same thickness of stainless steel, and work just fine, but they charge about $10 insteaqd of the 3 you pay at the restaurant supply, and teh goodgrip has the rubber on the handles, which they think makes it easier to grip, but I find to be totally useless. I prefer the pure stainless ones, and they are much cheaper..[p]Here should be a link to the 12" tongs. (assuming this forum accepts html.
