I am still an amateur egger... Can somebody tell me why it is that sometimes when I smoke all night and day...the load of coal I use will last, then other times it seems to burn all but away in the night. Im using Royal Oak usually but just tried a bag of Kamodo joes.

    Hi Thump,

I haven't a clue. Sorry. I normally use Royal Oak but have been trying a 20# bag of Cowboy that I picked up over the holidays for a good price. My impression is that the Cowboy burns faster then the Royal Oak but I have no way to substantiate that. There can be any number of variables. I noticed the other day that the wind was out of the north and was hitting my lower vent straight on, I couldn't get the egg below 500º till I really closed that lower vent down.

    Gator

The temperature of the BGE...the lump will burn faster at high temps than it will at low temps...
  • Who knows??? I have had a 38 hour burn on a low and slow. There was still some left but not enough for another confident cook.
