Kitchen Scale?

I want to get a kitchen scale after watching a American Test Kitchen episode where they made
Almost No Knead Bread.

http://www.americastestkitchentv.com/recipes/login.asp?recipeids=4748&LoginForm=recipe&iSeason=9

I noticed that the cook zeroed out out the weight after placing a measuring cup on the scale. I think this would be a very good feature to have on a scale.
I have this scale saved to a wish list and wondered if anybody has this scale and know if it has this feature.

My Weigh KD-7000 Digital Stainless-Steel Food Scale.

Thank You

    loco_engr,

Most kitchen scales have that feature. It's called tare. :)

I have a few 1-2 lbs scales for measuring spices. Most scales have the option of zeroing out the container weight. It is called the tare weight. It is the weight of the empty container.

Loco....Best scale I have ever worked with. Been using the exact model for a couple years and absolutely love it! A great choice. ;)

I have it and yes it does. Cool feature.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

The zero "tare" feature can be used with the empty vessle that you are going to add your products to. After the addition of each product you tare the scale again and it reads 0.00 again and is ready for your next addition. Just keep adding and tareing. Quite useful and easy. Just be sure not to exceed the maximum capacity of the scale.

    Hey loco_engr

The My Weigh 7000-Gram Stainless-Steel Kitchen Food Scale does have the tare function. Another thing you can do with the tare function is to place a bowl on the scale and hit tare, add an ingredient to the weight you want and hit tare again. Every time you add an weighed ingredient you can hit tare until you have all the weighed ingredients in the one bowl. LOL, I use my KD-7000 most often for weighing burgers, they are all within a gram or two of equal weight.
The company above that markets them is one of the same ones from Amazon. I have talked to their customer service and they are very nice people.

This is the same scale LC uses and recommends. ;)

    Best regards to ya,

    Gator

Ain't it the truth? I never weighed a burger in my life til I got this thing. The other night I was vac sealing a pulled pork butt. Did I fill the bag and seal. Nah. I measured 1 lb per bag and then sealed it. It's an addiction I tell ya!!

Who would have guessed weighing burgers could be fun, LOL. I spent to long working restaurants where we had to weigh them, I think.

I've got the next best thing to a spelling keyboard.

iespell is an add on spell checker for internet explorer that does a fantastic job and is free!

I use this program every time I post. I click my right mouse button in the edit window and click on "check spelling" on the pop up menu. It is very good at figuring out what I am trying to spell and it works anywhere on the web.

I don't have that model, although I do like my digital scale I rarely use it for bread making. The tare feature is really convenient, much better than my first kitchen scale which was a cuisinart brand and not digital.

On a side note, why is no knead bread all the rage these days? I don't get it. I've made bread traditionally by hand, kneaded in the kitchen aid mixer and the food processor. It's just not hard to do. And the food processor is method is so fast. Additionally traditional bread dough is so much easier to work with and shape than the super wet dough that is used in no knead recipes.

  • I recently bought the Oxo Good Grips Food Scale with Pull-Out Display ($47.50 at Amazon). It costs more than your choice but is more compact and easier to store. Resolution is 1/8 oz, maximum capacity is 11 pounds, and it has tare capability. I'm very happy with it.
  • I think that the long rest (18 hours) lets the bread develop a better flavor. Try it and see what you think.
