Newbe needs help - drip pans?

when recipies call for drip pans do you put them with the coals or on the cooking grate? On my webber it was with the coals? Using for the first time today - smokin turkey

    Definatly not on the coals but under the turkey. What are you using to hold the turkey? Rack or an upright gizmo that

    mattinthehat,[p]Avoid on the coals. Charcoal briquettes are a totally different animal than lump charcoal. Briquettes you let get hot and then cook over them, but with lump it is always burning. Placing an aluminum drip pan on lump will do two things. It will restrict airflow needed for the lump to burn, but more importantly it will melt![p]Tim
