Cast Iron in the Egg?

Unknown
edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
I was told from lodge I have to burn off my oval casserole dishes because I screwed up with the seasoning I forgot to flip them up side down and the oil turned dark and collected at the bottom and are ver gummy so they told me to put them in a self cleaning oven for a complete cycle to burn off the gummy stuff, now you are not suppose to leave the racks in the oven when doing a self clean cycle so I cant put the dishes on the bottom thats where the coil is, Now I want to put thwem in the egg and burn them in thee how hot for how long in the egg can I do this with out frying my gaskit? if it needs to be at 500 or 600 This temp I was told is what a self clean oven gets too, but to burn this stuff off the dishes they must be in there a couple of hours at least they said at lodge. Thanks for the reply. David K

  • David K,I seasoned my Lodge cast iron at about 275 or 300 degrees in the EGG. Just put it in upside down and re-coat any spots needing more crisco. It worked great.Oil does not need to be very hot to melt...

tn slagamater,[p]I'll second the use of the egg over the oven. My entire house smelled like burning cooking oil during my first seasoning. Since then, I have used the egg to reseason 2 times without any problems.[p]-SmokeyDrew

    David K,
I after seasoning mine one time in the oven I blew out my bottom cooking element. When I asked the store what would cause an element to blow like it did. She said sometimes grase will fall on it and create a hotspot and burn through. Granted the oven is like 20 yrs old. And the Smell does linger for a few days if you season in the oven.

I think you will find that when you re-season it, that a temp of about 450 for an hour will work better than a lower temp. Let it cool gradually.[p]Be sure to turn it upside down and remove any puddles or even thick spots of oil before seasoning it.[p]Toy Man
