A Passover Brisket Story of Mom and Me. . .

if any of you recall, i posted last week about experimenting doing a traditional passover brisket in the egg (brisket in a pot, covered with liptons onion soup and red wine, cooked uncovered indirect at 350 for one hour, then sealed tight with hdaf and cooked for two more hours). . .my household thought it was the best passover brisket we ever ate. . .and i told mom and dad that i would prepare the briskets for the passover sedar. . .however, i sent some home for mom and dad to try, and mom said, "nope, too smokey" (i didn't use any wood and had an established fire, there was no smokey, just a great rustic taste that you could tell didn't come from the oven) and "while i appreciate you doing the brisket, please do it in the traditional method in the oven". . .of course, being the dutiful son that i am i responded "ok mom". . . .[p]ah, but here is what i did. . ..i bought 3 small brisket flats (about 3 lbs each). .. two of them i did in the oven, but the third one i did in the egg, exactly as i did last weekend. . ..wrapped them in foil and took them over to mom's last night. . .so there i am in the kitchen having pulled one out and started thin slicing it, and mom comes in, no words being spoken, grabs a bite to taste test and pronounces. .. ."max, that's really good. ..see, i told you the traditional method was the way to go, thanks". . .at which point, i looked at her and said. .."mom, that's the one i did in the egg. . HAAA". . .young sydney almost split a gut cracking up. . ..mom kept her dignity though. . .said "ok, you made a hypocrit out of me". . .so, when the night was over and it was time to bring home leftovers, i was only able to bring home one of the brisket's i did in the oven. . ..funny, everybody ate the 'egged' brisket and loved it (old and young alike). . ..[p]true tale, likely to become folk legend for the egg sceptics out there. . . [p]hope all our jewish friends had a great passover. ..[p]

mad max beyond eggdome,[p]We have a group in the Temple who do a women's seder on the last night, celebrating the participation of Miriam and other women involved in the Exodus. Being the radical I am, I participate in that (I'm also a member of the brotherhood which drives the sisterhood nuts). Last year they asked if I could bring a brisket. Sure. I did the super egg treatment on a 12 pounder. Those women were VULTURES. I brought home nothing but the beach towel I wrapped it in.[p]A quiet call came in this year...can I bring the brisket again. Maybe...2. Ha! They can appreciate a good brisket![p]mShark

mad max beyond eggdome, for those of us not raised to fully appreciate Passover traditions, what is "hdaf"?

  • mollyShark,
two things. . .[p]1. good for you on the briskets. . .of course, i'm sure texas jews have a different appreciation for smoked anything than washington jews do. . .btw, how does it taste with bbq sauce on matzo??. ..[p]2. you may drive the sisterhood nuts, but i'm betting the 'brothers' love having you as a member of their little fraternity!!![p]

  • Wise One,[p]hdaf - Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil. . .gee, i learned that acronym here on the forum. . ..LOL

I think it's Yiddish for "Reynolds Wrap."

mad max beyond eggdome, you mean it's not the traditional hdtf (heavy duty tin foil)? LOL, live and learn And here I thought I was learning a new word to share with my Jewish friends. I was going to be so knowledgeable, talking about this unleven pastry used to wrap the brisket. Too funny.

  • mad max beyond eggdome,[p]it's your mother who's the heretic.[p]The long missing 11th commandment goes like this:[p]thou shalt cook all thou's food on the Big Green Egg.[p]
  • char buddy (for now),
that's her. . .. bev the heretic. .. you'd think she'd know that 11th commandment. . .after all, she was with the whole gang in the desert. .. walked across the red sea and everything. .. in the movie, 'the 10 commandments' when everyone is dancing around the golden calf, she is the 3rd heretic from the left. . .LOL

mad max beyond eggdome,[p]Great story, Max. Kinda makes me wish I was Jewish. My family hasn't gotten together for any holidays in over 15 years. Your fortunate to have such a tight knit family. Mac

aways willing to take a convert. . .but i'm not sure religion has anything to do with family get-togethers. . .if yours doesn't get together for thxgiving/xmas/easter, i doubt they'd do any better for hannukah or passover.. . .but despite the foolishness sometimes surrounding these get-togethers, they are important, especially for the kids. .. .
