Well, now that I can FINALLY cook a steak that's worth eating - thank you BGE - I'm interested in getting some decent steak knives. I have a set of Weber knives, which are okay I guess, but I'm considering some that cost more than 5 bucks each.

I'm not planning to spend an arm and a leg on them, though I suppose that is relative. I've been looking at the Wusthof Classics since that's what I have for my kitchen knives. Anyway, I thought I'd poll the peanut gallery and see what you fine folks are using. Suggestions please?

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Take a look at the Forschners (sp?). They are made by the Swiss Army folks and are really a great value for the money.
  • my wife found a set of the wusties at marshall's, on sale for pretty cheap. we use them all the time. they don't stay sharp very long if you are cutting on ceramic or glass plates of course.

they get a decent edge with a chef's choice sharpener and are good for another month or so.

Thanks, Jeff. Are these the Classics you're talking about? I've seen Wusthof knives at Marshalls and TJMaxx, but not the higher end ones, just stamped steel. I don't think I've ever seen steak knives. Just a paring knife from time to time. Worth another look though.

I wonder if any of them stay sharp for very long on ceramic plates. I guess I'll have to use paper! :)

  • they are the classics. she got them because they match the set.

when i say they were on sale, i'm of course repeating what she told me. all the shoes she buys are "on sale" too
    hahaha

i dunno, maybe $30 for four knives?

THAT, my friend was a helluva sale!! Williams-Sonoma sells those for $160 for four!! So does everyone else!

Can't help ya with the shoes though. Is Filene's Basement still around? hahaha

  • holy crap.

maybe it wasn't 30 bucks... hahaha

but i know we only got them because they were on the proverbial "sale". i guess i would say they are certianly worth 30,40,50 bucks. but if they were 160, i dunno. is their paring knife $40?

Yep. $39.95. For a paring knife! And the only thing I use my paring knife for is as a STEAK knife! Does a pretty good job at that though.

I like the idea of having a matched set, but the best price I've found so far is $30...each! As a set of six.

Maybe the Webers aren't so bad. :)

  • somewhere around my house i have a set of the knives they give you at outback steakhouse.. . .they were a gift so i don't know what they cost, but i know they sell them there. .. they sure work great .. ..but i don't know where the hell i put them ... .now i'm thinking i should go back and find them. .. .but you know, now that i know how to grill such a good tender steak on the egg, my regular knives cut them just fine. ..i don't need special knives anymore

Heck you could just use a FORK! :)
  • some nights brother!!

although i do like my steak to have a little chew to it!, but you get the idea!! seriously though, whether its a stip, ribeye, hanger, even something like flank steak, i usually just set the table with our normal kitchen knives and don't even bother with the fancy shmancy steak knives anymore. ...know one ever asks for a "sharp" knife anymore ...i'll take that as a compliment. ...hell, when i served 40 pounds of prime rib at our office christmas party, we used plastic forks and knives. .. worked just fine. ..ahhh, the magic of the egg!!
  • i guess that was the payback for your telling her you were ten inches all those years!! :ermm:
