Pro Com 4 vs Cyber Q II - LONG
Smokin' Padre
Posts: 85
G'morning!
I'm researching information in comparing the Pro Com 4 and the Cyber Q II. I've looked at posts regarding them both and admit that I'm still a bit confused. I put an e-mail into the BBQ Guru folk after a phone call didn't get through.
I am not yet convinced that it is (easily) possible for the Cyber Q to go wireless, based upon what I've read. I have also not been able to find whether the Cyber Q II will alert the cook (indoors) if there is a problem during the night. I like the fact that you can access it via the computer but I have not been able to find any positive experiences with its computer program and the Blackberry (which I would use at the office and by the bedside if I needed to do anything to it).
The Pro Com 4 is certainly wireless and certainly has an alarm system that is attached to the pendent so wouldn't wake anyone up by me and the wife (which is a cost that I am willing to pay). The only downside is that I obviously can't take it with me to the office, even though my church is right down the street from where I live.
As far as what the most valuable feature for me is concerned, it has to be to get some sleep the night of the cook. I have been using a Smoke Vault for a year and a half now (propane fired)and have been very happy with its results (and expect to be estatic about the results of the BGE) but getting up every two hours or so was a real pain and especially so when we were having thirty adults and their children over for an end of school BBQ.
Sorry so long - simply trying to set the context. I'm still waiting to try the BGE for the FIRST time but, as of yet, still have no instructional DVD. But w/ a birthday coming up in three weeks, and a wife willing to make the purchase, information that is provided now will be of great benefit.
Thanks in advance for any help!!! :woohoo:

I believe the Cyber Q has been hooked up wireless. I think the way it was done was to use a small laptop with wireless and connect with say a desk top inside. To me it seems like overkill. If you start with the simplest set up and then gradually work up you learn: a) The capability of your equipment and b) your own capabilities as a cook. You should have no problems doing low and slow with a proper fire, calibrated dome, and a good cooking plan. My counsel is start simple and then ramp up the equipment with your experience.

Padre,
My complaint with the CyberQII is that you have to pump in at least another $200 on a higher end wireless USB hub to get the thing to work wirelessly. The other downside, is that it does NOT have a local alarm on the computer. I see these both as design weaknesses.
I just bought the CyberQII and I eneded up getting a USB to Cat5 converter (I paid almost $60, but you can get them cheaper) and ran a 50' Cat 5 cable under the door into the house. Not an elegant solution, but it was the best I could do on my budget.
I haven't reasearched the Pro Com as much since it was above my price point.
Good luck. -
I have a CyberQ II and I'm happy with it. There is the "Stoker". Check it out read this post. Tim
