I seem to be on the back deck all the time. Wife said she is going to get me a Chiminea so I won't freeze. Tonight - some Lanier La-Zag-Na - made with 3 meats and 3 cheeses. The kids nicknamed it the "Beast" a few years ago because is so heavy and filling. First time cooking it on Scooby Do - and it turned out great.

Building the Beast

The Beast is finished and ready to fight with Scooby Do. This thing must weigh at least 7-8 lbs! Notice the Deep Roaster Pan and not your normal Lasagna pan.

Scooby Do was getting ready to solve the mystery of Lanier La-Zag-Na...Scrappy Do was next to him still pissed at me for not letting him join in - and Shaggy the Gasser was asleep in his sleeping bag to the right

The Beast was a tight fit but Scooby Do got it in his mouth. Plate setter used with legs up and a 8 1/2" stone to keep bottom from burning...temp to cook held steady at 300 for about 1 1/2 hrs. Foil then came off for another 15 mniutes

While Scooby ate - he enjoyed the view of beautiful Lake Lanier for one reason

So he wouldn't have to help with remodeling the kitchen! Dang - my wife can spend some money with the best of them

The Beast is done but Scooby is still cooking

Cooking some Garlic Alabama...I mean Texas Toast

A huge pile of the Beast on our finest china. Donations for real plates accepted for us poor boys

Thanks for putting up with the long post - it was either do this for a while or sand more walls before painting...not a tough decision.

  • Hey - aren't you the one with the Ranch Kettle? I was looking to get one after recently selling my big offset. I used to do alot of BBQ's for the high school baseball program and fundraisers. I haven't seen one up close but have heard that it is huge. Can you smoke alot on it or mainly direct cooks?

    Thanks -

  • I have a ranch and you can use it to do long cooks yet why you have an egg! I do use it for mass cooks like burgers etc. Yet to be honest since I have had the ranch I would say 95% of the time I use it as a fire pit~!! Hoss

It's not an egg,it takes attention but it can cook more on 1 grill than 2 XL's.I can do direct or indirect. It's more of a summertime grill/smoker because it is not ceramic.I also got an offset trailer smoker/cooker for REALLY big cooks.I love the Rancher for certain cooks. ;) Probably get booted  but.....You asked.Yes I highly recommend(sp) one for certain cooks! ;)

Makes a damn good one too!I'm with you it a Helluva burger cooker! How you been doin my friend?
  • Don't get me wrong...my Egg is #1. I was looking for something to do alot of food when we have people up during summer. Son is 23 in college...so we're the hand out place. Daughter is 17...so we're the hang out place. There are times when we have 10-12 folks up plus the 5 in the family...and with many of them being 21-24 year old college kids - the boys can eat like you've never seen. Thus the Ranch Kettle for a ton of ribs, burgers and dogs, wings, etc.

    Thanks -

I know what u meam.I would'nt trade mine for nothin.MSEgger tried to do a burger cook earlier this year for a crowd and could'nt keep up,that Rancher will cook 25-30 burgers ,no problen, with the other half set aside as a restin place.I think we need to take this conversation off forum,e-mail me.Sometimes feathers get ruffled,if you know what I mean. ;)
  • I think all grills have a place and a use. Yes I have smoked butts and briskets using the ring of fire method on the ranch with great success. Yet it is a lot more work tending and monitoring the fire then an egg. Yet if we are talking burgers and dogs. Build a charcoal fire on half the grill, fill the cooking grate half way and spin the grate over the coals, if you get a flare up spin it back over your safe zone. very easy. You can feed the college football team and the cheerleaders and then place the grill to the side and do smores! Hoss I am doing great getting ready for some out of town cooking in the next couple of months! How have you been doing? SO how much loney do I have to cook to get my badge? I love a WV (West Virginia) Steak Snadwich!!! Hoss
  • Hey, I enjoyed learning about another cooker. Enjoyed the post and the variety of it all.
