Anyone have the Maverick ET-7?

Hello all.

I received the maverick ET-7 thermometer from sis-in-law for Christmas. Very nice. The ET-7 has 2 meat thermometers rather than a meat and grill thermometer like the 73. I did read, however that the 2nd meat thermometer can be used as a grill thermometer by using a potato?? I assume that the potato is used as a stand?? Does anyone here have any experience with the ET-7 and the potato trick?

Thanks

  •  I bought the ET-7 before I purchased the ET-73.

If it were me and I possibly could I would return it and get the ET-73, both were the same price.

The 7 has no alarms, mine had terrible distance reception and one of my probes went out.

The probes could have been easily been my fault, I wouldn't think they were any different than the food probe on the 73.

The distance problem, some people have had the same problem with the 73, however, my 73 will transmit & recived 2 houses away as well as from anywhere inside my house and or basement. Possibly just the difference in the two units, one being good and the other not so good, bad actually.

Alarms on the 73 make it worth having. Not having the alarms on the 7 was ok during day time but for overnight I have to wake up and physically check.

If you keep the 7, then pick up some alligator clips from walmart, radio shack, automotive store, electronic store and adjust he opening on the clip so it it a tight slide onto the clip.

Pushing one probe through a potato or through a carrot, sticking the bottom of the carrot into the grid so it is somewhat like a tree, well just get some alligator clips. If I recall they were a buck or two at walmart in the automotive section.
