Alternative "Lumpstyles"

In keeping with the discussion of using alternatives to the BGE lump, I wanted to just throw another company into the ring. I had been dealing with high priced BGE lump in my area as well and had asked for the forum's help in finding another source a few weeks ago. Char-Woody recommended Ozark Oak Charcoal, Yellville, Arkansas. Apparently he has used this brand previously, and it meets his high Q standards. They produce only 10lb bags of lump, and they sell it for $1.80 per bag. 64 bags per pallate, at a cost of $120.20. They do not ship the product, leaving these arrangements to the customer. Shipping charges may well end up doubling the cost of the charcoal, but it's still cheap (lump+shipping cost=$7.20/20lbs) compared to the high local cost of BGE lump. Worth considering. Their phone number is 807-427-5688. Thanks to C~W!

    bdavidson,
My first thought is, where the heck do you put 64 bags of charcoal? I have this funny mental picture here. After delivering 640 lbs of hardwood lump, the only place to put it is in the unused coal bin in the basement (my grandma's old house had one). May as well put Humpty down there, too, with a chimney extender sticking up out of a window well. Here you are, shoveling charcoal into the BGE all winter, all summer....sort of like Casey Jones.
    Cheers,
Gretl (I'm really just hungry, not totally loony here)

    Gretl,
(aka "Heidi") You don't have to order a full pallate...I just use that as an example. As I had indicated previously, I toyed with the idea of getting a pallate's worth of lump, but decided that it wouldn't be a good idea since my wife's car would be displaced from the garage. Not such a wise move. I'd be sleeping on the sofa until Eggtoberfest!!!

bdavidson,[p]Ozark Oak lump is also sold under the Hasty-Bake and Old Georges brandnames. I have used it in the past and feel that it's the finest lump available (yes, that means better than Royal Oak). Unfortunately, it's not available here in Ohio.[p]I may have to drive down to Iowa to visit Seedubya and haul a load back with me.[p]K~G

    Gretl,
What? it's only 640 pounds of charcoal. You know, lots of us wish we had a covered roof for those inclement days of egging so the basement coalbin idea has a certain appeal. Don't suppose one could really rig up a safe setup in the basement. What with carbon monoxide and all...[p]I ordered 10 bags of True Value lump and it took up a bit of my shed space. No matter what, tho, my tractor and car get a space in the garage.[p]Mary
