the prices arent makeing much sense to me lately. ribeyes at 5.99, stew meat 4.99. found a bottom roast for around 3 per pound for this weekends stew but how can stew meat be 4.99 a pound when ribeyes just a dollar more

  • I would guess it is all tied to the economy. Fewer people going out and spending money on a nice steak dinner creates a surplus of primal cuts of beef. Every cow has a certain amount of roasts, steaks, and the rest ground into hamburger. I would expect hamburger prices to climb and steak prices to fall since people are doing without the more expensive cuts of beef o9r going out for dinner.

    and Hangar steaks are $2.00 a pound...mmmmmmm good :P
  • i think part of the rib roast pricing is just the fact that its christmas season....they are always in abundance and priced to sell this time of year....costco, safeway, they are cheap everywhere!!! quit griping about it and go buy a couple!!!!

    Loss leaders.
Stores sale prices are at cost and below to get you in the store and then sell you other stuff at regular price.
Meat is the draw then milk and eggs and some produce usually oranges this time of the year. The rest is the profit.

Even in Canada I have noticed great pricing lately. Prime rib roasts going for $3.99/pound etc.

P.S. Steven sorry didnt check the forum for a few days...Cooks Bay is mostly froze over and most of the smaller bays and shoreline...but not safe yet. Making ice though...till Friday from weather reports. As long as wind doesnt pick up and weather cooperates might have a great season.
  • i hear you about the 'cheap' cuts of meat. . .when i was a kid my mom would buy flank steaks cause they were dirt cheap and no one knew how to cook/grill them. . .she would do a creditable job marinading them and grilling them indoors on our little electric broiler. .. .now they are expensive as hell cause there are only two per cow.. . i see the same thing happening to hanger steaks. . ..

A few years ago, certain pieces of stewing beef were really cheap at a local market. Shanks cuts and, most especially, oxtail. Then they started going up. Ox-tail is above 3 a pound. They've started selling beef neck bones. While neck bones really are great for chili, and/or stock, paying close to $2 for something that is 60% bone is a little pricey.

    But steak specials go on.

I was delighted the last time I stopped at the organic farm shop. They gave me packs of soup bones gratis.
  • You said it Max, go buy a couple. Down here we can get premium Rib Eye Roast DE boned and tied back on for 5.47 per Lb.
  • Get a couple of those inexpensive ribeyes. Trim and grind them, form into 6 oz patties. Your friends will squeal "best burger I've ever had".
