Temperature guage

Why does moisture condensate in my percisiom temperature gauge? I have had to replace it twice in 12 months. Should I remove it from the egg when not cooking?

    H Rankin, that is a common problem with the older style soft plastic lens style. It's not as much with the newer flat glass dial but as you can attest it can be. The best bet is already pass you as the water is already in, but in the future force a little bead of clear scilicone all the way around the dial so it fills the minute spcace between the metal and glass. You can then trim the excess with a razor and it will look nice but still protect it.

    quick fingers got ahead of me...as for getting the moisture outI've seen eggers post that they dry them out in the kitchen oven - the idea is the smae way the water got in then the steam will also get out. Once you're sure it is dry do the scilicone thing. Now to go one step further - up until a year ago the thermometer hole was drilled toward the center thus the thermometer rested at an angle and water wasn't nearly the problem, but now with the hole drilled straight down any rain will stand on the dial and is bound to get in the minute space unless sealed.
  • H Rankin, if you use a hacksaw blade and cut the bottom of the temperature guage along the bottom edge, any moisture will drain out. Placing it in the oven with the heat on will force it out but you need an opening...
