Looking to buy new Egg
I have been looking at getting a new grill for a while and also am interested in getting a smoker.[p]The gass grill that I have now does not get hot enough to really sear the meat. I like my steaks VERY rare, but like to get a good crust on the outside.[p]I also do a lot of duck and goose hunting and would like to start smoking some of my birds.[p]Is the egg a great smoker that you can also grill on or a great grill that will also smoke?[p]Where is the best place to buy one?

Nate Dogg,
the egg is all that and more. . .you can seer at very high temps, or lo and slo all night, and/or you can use it like a wood fired oven to bake as well. . ..[p]you can buy them at specialty bbq places, or order direct from atlanta. .. .[p]where do you live??

Nate Dogg,
The egg will do all of this and more! We no longer eat steaks out (unless someone else is paying) because the egg cooks a much better steak. Some of the regulars on the forum will log on soon be more specific.[p]We live in metro Atlanta where the big egg headquarters is located but any thing you cook or smoke is a treat.[p]My favorite is a boston butt lo and slo,225-250 degrees 18-20 hours, can't be matched. The smell and taste of pork this way scrumdillyicious.[p]There are several sizes but if you can afford the$ get a large. Some eggers have one of each size. Real eggheads.[p]Ask questions and someone on this forum will know the answer. Great people here![p]Joe

Nate Dogg,
Type in your Zip code and find the nearest one. Search the net and see what deals are offered, but beware of shipping costs, as they can be the deciding factor on the best price.

I live in Iowa. There is a local dealer here that sells the lg one for $777 plus $90 for the next and plus $70 for the legs, and the med for $588 plus $90 for the nest and $70 for the legs.[p]I found a place online that sells the Med for $500 plus extra for the legs and table. They have the lg for $620. Shipping is free.[p]Do I need the extra stuff for it? How would you use it without legs?

Nate Dogg,
for 800 bucks, a lot of places will sell you a large, with a nest, daisy wheel top and the dome temp thermometer. . .. [p]not sure what you mean by 'legs'. . .if you have the nest, that's all you need. . .and, by legs, if they mean the little ceramic feet, you should get those as part of the purchase without paying any extra. . .[p]you don't have to have a nest. you can set it down on the ground on just the little ceramic feet if need be. .. a nest is nice though, and a table is better (but they are costly unless you build your own, and you can see many examples if you go to naked whiz's web site. . .www.nakedwhiz.com). ..[p]as a minimum, you need the daisy wheel top and dome temp thermometer. .. you should also get a plate setter for doing indirect and lo and slo cooks. . .[p]if you go to the bge main web page and click on the catalogue, you can see some of the other stuff. . .

Nate Dogg,[p]Check out these folks. Best I've seen on the web so far.

Nate Dogg,[p]I had already been thinking about one of points you raise with your question about it being a great grill...I don't think it gets enough credit for that end of it...I have heard many times from non-eggers how they "heard somewhere" that once you eat a steak off the egg you'll never want anything else, and I absolutely agree. As a bonus when cooking one of the worlds best steaks , you'll be better able to get em just right everytime.

Nate Dogg,
Nate, we live in Iowa too, and got our large from a local dealer in Des Moines for MUCH less. Extremely happy with the egg and all the info I get from this web site. You will not be sorry you purchased one. Our dealer also just replaced our band with the USA band. I just bought three large pork loins to cook up this weekend. I can hardly wait till they are done. Absolutely the best!

Nate Dogg,
IMHO, you don't need the nest. Jusy build a table. It's fairly cheap and easy. I built mine out of pressure treated lumber and with the screws, I spent about $40.00. It looks just like the ones on the BGE products list.

Painter,[p]I would warn anyone going to buy online to be careful because if there are any problems when you receive your item, some places are very difficult to deal with and if there was any problem requiring you to return the item you have to pay the cost of shipping to send it back. I speak from experience because I have had this happen to me from what was supposed to be a reputable online dealer.

Thanks everyone, I went to the dealer today and he quoted me $700 for the lg with the legs with wheels and the fold down table. Seems like a pretty fair deal to me. He will get them in on Thurs so I have until then to find a better deal.

lumplighter,
I totally agree with you on buying an item of this expense, especially the weight factor because of the shipping.
Expensive if you're the one who pays the return shipping if there is a problem.
Buying locally, even if a little costlier up front will generally pay off in the long run, as you can have face to face contact with a real person. And warranty issues and shipping charges could come into play as well.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience.
I've been generally pleased with my online purchases(knock on wood).
