Off-set smokers?

Some of you may remember my uncle and the flaming Brinkman. I asked him since he was now down a smoker if he had thought about purchasing a new unit.

He said he thinks he's going to buy an off-set smoker because (no disrespect), the off-set smoker is far more versitle than my egg. Wouldn't I agree?

My response was pretty simple, if I thought that was true I probably would have bought one of those instead.

Do any of you have experience with these? Am I missing something?

Part of me thinks he's hopeless to argue with. He's just right.

Many of us cut our bbq teeth on offsets. They are actually great cookers. But to say they are more versitle than an egg is laughable.
  • If you come to Abita I have one I'd be more than happy to give him.

Just haven't hauled it to the dump yet. Might have to chase of a few critters that have set up residence.
  • Ha ha ha ha ha

My egg is my stove, oven, smoker and grill.
  • With all due respect, to each his own. If he is set on buying an offset then so be it. It is all about what makes you happy.I have eaten excellent BBQ off of many different types and rigs.

The offset makes a great warming center at my super bowl parties  . There are some nice and well designed offsets out there that will produce some great smoked food but you would be hard pressed to do a pizza. The egg IMHO is one of the most versatile cookers out there. Look at the pics here and figure how many you could do on an offset. Paella on the offset??

Yea, he is hopeless. Especially if he has had your egged food.

The first over-nighter I did with a new off-set I was up every hour and a half refilling the charcoal.

The first over-nighter I did with an Egg...I slept all night all the way through.
  • I just gave my Brinkman to my neighbor. I agree the BGE is a much more versatile cooker. Love the fact that it holds it temp constant for a much longer period of time. Love the fact that there is no water pan to put up with and have to refill in the middle of the night, and this is coming from someone that owns a Smokey Mountain. Although I could sear on the offset it was then very difficult to get the temp back down. How about the clean out of an offset.. talk about a pain. Lastly there a a lot of toys for the BGE that I did not see with my offset, such as spider, wok, raised girds etc. So for my 2cents worth the Egg is forever the offset is for the neighbor...

  • Having recently completed building a decent size offset at work and having cooked on it, the smoked food is good. As for versatility it cannot match my egg. I built the offset to feed my crew, I had 30 racks laying flat inside. It does have capacity the egg does not, but consumes charcoal and wood quickly. The egg is still my cooker of choice at home.

Thanks guys. I think it might just be a case of him needing to go his own way, and not follow a girl when it comes to BBQ.

I had done some research about off-sets before I bought my Egg, but I have to admit my mind was made up. I just wanted to make sure I did in fact understand the off-set.
