Upside-Down Tomatoes

Take a five gallon bucket drill a one inch hole in the bottom, take your transplant and carefully put through the hole. Fill the bucket with dirt and hang in full sun, water normally. The plant will try to turn upwards but the weight of the tomatoes will pull it back down. Since the plant is not in contact with the ground your pest problem will also be minimized. Believe it or not this works great. There is also room in the top for peppers.

Mark,
Cool idea. I'm gonna try it if and when this rain lets up. Thanks for the tip.[p]Spring Chicken

Mark,
Did this a couple of years back, worked great until the wind blew the bucket off it's hook and broke the plant. Make sure you have a hook in the garage in case a storm blows up.

Mark,
Now I am impressed...this is great...I plan to try it to , and can't wait to see the look on that old farts face next door when I out do his fancy bean staking with this idea. Oooh, sure hope it works as planned.

Mark,
I would guess that a food-grade bucket would be the safest thing to use, and not something from the hardware store. I get 5-gallon food-grade plastic buckets at our local dairy; I think they sell for about 2 bucks apiece. I use them for brining turkeys. [p]Thanks for posting. This looks like something really good for summer....which seems SO far away right now.[p]Cheers,

Chet,
That is IT!! I've tried to be a good neighbor, but with you parading around naked while you tinker with that green thing like a lover with no head, it's difficult. I've been working on some new bean stakes, anyway.[p](Sorry. I've got a warped sense of humor. I couldn't resist. Post some pics of the tomatoes when you do it.)

MapMan,
Thanks for the link. This may be the gardening "green thumb" I've been looking for all my life. First of all, it is unusual (I like that), it makes good sense (I like that), pests, weeds and insects are easier to control (I like that), and planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning, harvesting are easier (I like that too). No negatives... all positives. Yes.. This will be the year I have a successful garden. [p]Spring "Fresh out of the hanging garden" Chicken
