Thinking about buying a BGE?

Unknown
edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
Finally moved to a place where I have a backyard. Looking at gas grills for the spring. Two of my buddies are really pushing me toward a Big Green Egg. I was hoping to get some views from current Eggholders. Is the Big Green Egg worth it?

  • Nate K.,
Go for it! We did 6 years ago and love it. There is a learning curve, but the egg is forgiving. Steaks, lo&slo pork, chicken, pizza everything is better. No more grill burners or grates to replace. It's habit forming.[p]Joe

  • jawjajoe,
Should I get a medium egg or a large one?

  • No! Run away! It's like an addiction. First, the BGE. Then the small BGE. Then the mini and then a Guru. And a platesetter. Not to mention the hours wasted on visiting this forum. And also the time and money spent traveling to various eggfests. You'll find yourself associating with nefarious folks with names such as "The Naked Whiz" and unsavory folks such as "Stumpbaby."[p]If you currently have a high end gas grill it will become an unused relic, rusting and neglected in the far corner of the patio.[p]You'll find yourself getting up at three in the morning to smell (you'll say check on, but that's not needed) on the pork butt you put on the previous evening.[p]No, it's not just a grill. It's more like a lifestyle. If you think you can handle it, then maybe you might consider the egg.[p]BTW, no offense meant to TNW. And Stump, well, you prolly consider it a compliment!

  • Nate K., I'm one of a dozen guys in my neighborhood that has an Egg. 80% of us have the large - the others have a medium. I've had my Egg since June 2003 and cook on it regularly. Our wives think we're in some crazy cult, but I've never heard one of them complain about anything that comes off the Egg. Go for it... you'll never look back!

  • Nate K.,[p]I've had mine since June 2003 and love it. I found a race horse deal on a medium in the paper so I jumped on it, but a large egg is the way to go.

    Nate,
Pull the trigger. Get to know your butcher. Buy a gas grill later if you can figure out a reason.

  • Daddyo, Yup, you're another prime example! ;)

Nate K.,[p] FWIW, My wife won a $550.00 Weber gas grill a year ago, It is probably one of the top of the line Gas Grills out there. It was still a grill, with flame up every time you took your eyes off of it for 5 minutes. I had talked to several people I knew that had BGE'S, I had heard nothing but good about them. My wife got mine for me for father's day last year & I use it at least 2 times a week in the winter, & damn near every night in the summer. My neighbors are always asking me ( What's on the Egg tonight,) Not trying to sell you nothing, Just my opinion. Also, If you do get one, But A Large.[p] Dave

  • Nate K.,

    Smokin Joe,
WOW! A dozen eggs in one neighborhood! Y'all can have your own Eggfests any weekend you choose! Get 'em all going at once and the neighborhood must smell wonderful!

    Nate K.,
The Egg really does become a way of life once you own one...or two. Got my first one 3 years ago and can't think of a bad meal I've cooked. Some have been less than perfect but the egg is very forgiving while you're learning.
A buddy of mine bought a nice, big, shiny stainless steel gas thing last year. When he visited last Spring, I cooked a couple things on it for him. This past Fall he was here and I again cooked. Shortly after he got back to the Left Coast, he called...so, I'm thinking of buying an egg this week. He said at first he was going to use both but I haven't heard him mention the gasser lately.
And if you invest in one, go for the large, even if it means waiting a little longer.

    Nate K.,
I discovered trhe egg just after I bought one of thos big stainless gas numbers a few years back. I delayed buying an egg until this last summer. The only thing I regret is the wait. I've only turned the gas out fit on once since the egg arrived and I can not remember why. We use the egg three to five times per week. Never had a bad meal and most are outstanding. This forum is another advantage EXCEPT, like the egg, it is addictive.

Nate K.,Go for it, if in doubt, read the forum, join in even if you don't have an egg. I lurked on the forum for some time then bought a large, had to post and tell the forum members I would have to wait for help to get it off the truck????[p]No wrote the forum back to me, unpack it and move the pieces one by one to the yard and assemble. (Red faced, LOL) oh, that makes sense.[p]I'm single and now have 3 eggs. I'm a true cult member. ÜÜÜ[p]Good Luck with whatever you decide but come back and visit.[p]

  • Shelby, Yes in deed! We have about 500 homes in the subdivision and there are at least three or four other guys ready to Egg-merse themselves into the "black hole" we know & love. We are talking about doing a Que cook-off this summer. We already do a wing cook-off on Labor Day and some folks Egg their wings while others fry. It should be fun. We'll keep everyone posted. Joe

    Nate K.,
Stop thinking and just do it! You're asking a very biased bunch here. You need to ask the people who don't have one but have eaten the products of egg-cooking.

  • Nate K.,
I laughing out loud...you just got told...

    Nate K.,
Buy the Egg, you'll never look back. A gas grill is nothing but outdoor oven.

  • Shelby, By the way, one of my most favorite restaurants out your way is Draggo. Love the grilled oysters!!! I might have just drooled on myself thinking about them... LOL Joe
  • Nate K., we bought a large BGE about three years ago and have absolutely loved it. A year ago we added a small BGE to the family, which we use mainly for grilling burgers and steaks. Buy the large one; you'll never regret it. Oh, and the eggcessories you'll find most useful, IMO, are the plate setter, the dual function metal top, ash tool, and V-rack. Our large BGE sits in a wooden table made by BGE, whereas the small sits in a small Egg nest. Both good investments, too. All in all, these smokers + extras are not cheap, but they're worth every penny spent, I think. This forum, you'll find out, is a great source of information, and humor too. Good luck.

    Jerr,
Humor? What humor? Was that a joke? Hmm, maybe I've been looking at his thing all wrong!

  • Nate K.,[p]I'll chime in here, too. I have a stainless steel gas guzzler grill with all the bells and whistles, and I could buy a gaggle of green eggs for what I paid for it. I use it as a storage cabinet to hold my eggcessories. [p]cardit
