turkey split open in the back

been roasting my turkey (14lbs vertical) for about 2 1/2 hours so far on 300-350, covered loosely in foil. i just went to baste it and it is split open where the backbone is. HELP! how bad is this and what am i doing wrong??

    Nothing necessarily wrong. To keep the skin supple enough not to split requires it to be well oiled. Unless there is a contest where presentation is judged, you will be fine. Just keep on at it.

    I cooked three turkeys a couple of years ago for a friend's wedding. Two of the turkeys split badly. Fortunately the caterer (not me) was able to display the one good turkey and hide the flaws in the other two by slicing them to expose the meat. And that was after brining and rubbing them all down with olive oil. However, they were delicious.
