Remote Thermometer Recommendations

I just recieved my Medium Egg at Christmas and want to purchase a good remote thermometer for those long slow cooks and would like some suggestions on what products work well. I have heard Polder and Maverick mentioned in a few forum postings.[p]I am up in Canada and we are a bit buried in snow and it is pretty cold (-20 C in January) so I haven't used the Egg as much as I would like to (much easier to learn when it is warmer out!). But when the weather warms up to above zero I will jump right in.[p]Anyway...suggestions on where to order from the internet would be helpful too as I doubt I will find much up here. I have in-laws in Florida and can get it sent to them to bring back in the spring.[p]Great forum! Thanks in advance for all suggestions

ArtfulDodger,
I have 3 different brands of wireless. My least accurate is the Nu Temp 701 and it strays the higher the heat, but because I also bought a hi-temp probe for it I use it to monitor my dome temp. The real draw back to it though is there is on on/off switch so the units run until battery dies. Way too much trouble to remove the tiny screws to get to the batteries. My other two are neck and neck that be one from Sharper Image for $50US and a Taylor that I got on sale for about $30US. Range of 90 ft or so on all three is more than sufficient and their is no interference. The receiver on the Taylor is a small model like a pager and fits on your belt. Hope this evaluation helps.

Chef Wil,[p]This unit appears to have two probes - one for the meat and one for the dome. My question is, does it transmit the dome temp too? Or just the meat temp?[p]I think I want one with both transmitted channels so I can catch a flameout when it happens.[p]Chuck

RRP,
My problems with the NU-Temp 701 continue as well. What do you figure the problem is? Probes? In the past I have been very pleased with its performance.

Hammer,
maybe you and I got the only two lemons off that tree as others here have said they like their Nu Temps. Don't get me wrong I use it daily since the sender doesn't need the probe plugged in. Thus it sits on a table on the screened porch and broadcasts the outdoor temp to our bedside and at those low temps it appears to be quite accurate. Even when it was reading -19° a couple weeks ago!

RRP,
I've talked to Rick Sharpe at Wireless Alarm several times about it, and he explained to me that the probes were the problem, and that they had new one's coming.
He sent me a modified (probe) one, but not the final product. It was a little better.[p]Hammer

I received this unit for Christmas and it works well. There is one degree of difference between this unit and my Polder.[p]Larry
