Going to try and do my forst Turkey this weekend. Do I use the plate setter feet up or feet down? Or does it make any differnce?

  • feet up. .. .go read the mad max turkey central and then do a cold test fit to make sure everything fits first. ...

  • In assuming you are new here…Welcome toddh1971!
Both the nakedwhiz and madmax are full of information, a great place to get started and wonderful places / people to ask questions. BTW thirdeye’s site is also one of my go to places.
With regard to legs up or down on the plate setter: I always do legs up, even though it is not exactly the same set up / method as madmax does.
I have only done a turkey in a roaster once or twice as I prefer to roast / smoke mine on the grid above a dip pan. With the legs up, the pan is on the plate setter, but still spaced so that it is not directly on the surface and the grid is atop the legs. As mentioned, a test fit is always a good rule of thumb. I had a 24 pounder in the Large (set up as described) last fall and found that I was pretty much at the limit of a good fit.
Keep in mind that your Egging experiences are a journey….Kind of like life itself with the tests, failures and triumphs.
  • While there is no single right way to do anything on the Egg, usually it's feet up when roasting (can hold a drip pan if you need one)and feet down when baking.

...that's a guideline, not a hard and fast rule.
