Mini-egg cooking

I haven't even bought my first egg yet and already want a second. How many of you own the mini? It seems quite small to me. What can you cook on it? Is the combo of a large and a mini a good mix?

  • SteveB,[p]I have the large, small and mini, and do 90% of cooking on the mini. Realize that I am only cooking for two, and that doing low and slow, is not the mini's forte. Ribs, butt and brisket are best done on the large; spatchcocked chicken, multiple burgers, steaks, salmon, etc. on the small with some overlap.

    jack h,
I also will be doing most of my cooking for two. What types of things do you do on the mini?

SteveB,[p]That's what I have and it works well for me (but I'm thinking of adding a small)! The Mini works great cooking steaks, chicken, burgers, salmon steaks, etc. I often will use it for cooking lunch (it fits in the trunk of the car very easily ... inside a milk crate) and is a hit at the office. The wife and I have a one year old and he doesn't eat that much, so a meal for the three of us work. In a few years that will change![p]I have tried lon-n-slow cooks of it a few times. It works, but is a bit of a challenge with it's small capacity for food and charcoal![p]Smokey
  • SteveB,
I have a large, small and mini. I do almost all of my cooking on the large or small and usually save the mini for traveling or for those rare occasions when both the large and small are in use and I need to grill something else to go along with whatever I may be cooking. There have been a variety of discussions on the forum about the mini and its limitations/fortes - check the archives. It is best used for grilling a couple of steaks, two or three burgers, hot dogs/brats, two or three chicken breasts, etc. Its small size limits what you can cook at any one time but it is great for grilling. I wouldn't want to be without mine!

    SteveB,
For the longest time, all I had was the small and mini. I love both eggs. The best combination seems to be the Large and Small BGE. The large does the heavy lifting and the baking. The small cooks for two perfectly. Also, I think that for one rack of ribs, the small cooks them the best. The Mini is really nice because it uses so little charcoal and it is very portable. If you go on vacation, you can pack up the mini with a coffee can full of charcoal and be to cook all week.[p]Hope this helps,

SteveB, I have a large, medium and mini. While I probably do most of my cooking on the large, the mini is great for cooking up to four hamburgers, 10 hot dogs, 8 bratwurst, 3 pork chops, two chicken breasts, or a single turkey breast. I have also used it to do a couple of staeks with great success. If I were to start from scratch, I would probably buy a small and large but if traveling, the mini is definitely a great option as it is definitely more portable than even the small.

  • SteveB,
I do pork and lamb chops, tenderloins (pork), steaks, burgers and salmon on the mini. I forgot to mention that the large is great for pizza, or anything needing indirect cooking/plate setter setup.

  • jack h, I have large and mini. I originally got the mini solely for camping with my pop-up, which it is perfect for. The mini is the best for filet mignons, up to 4 or 5, chicken, really any kind of meat not cooking low and slow. The mini will burn out rather quickly with such a small amt. of charcoal. You can add another raised grid to it, the archives should show you more on that subject. I use it to grill veggies, cook whole vidalias with a pat of butter, etc. It is a fun, quick, easy to use , and easy to tote around egg. Have fun.

  • slicktop,
How high will the temp get up to on a mini and how long will it keep the temp?
