Thyme question?

Is there a sub for thyme? Or just go get some thyme?

I am making a bbq rub recipe that calls for thyme.

Any suggestions on what else I could use for a substitute?

I don't have any thyme for a "Creole Rub"

2 Tablespoons of salt

2 Tablespoons of granulated garlic

2 Tablespoons of granulated onion

2 Tablespoons of ground black pepper

2 Tablespoons of dry thyme

2 Tablespoons of paprika

2 Tablespoons of cayenne

    Sorry Tim....go get the thyme. ;) It's flavor is fantastic, without a decent substitute.
    Once you have it in the house, start throwing a bit into a pot of stew or soup....into a pot roast...etc... you won't let yourself run out again. ;) It is an absolute staple here. :)
  • Go get some thyme. Nothing else really tastes like it, and it's one of the essential flavor components in cajun/creole. That said, you could leave it out of your rub and it would still be perfectly edible.

    i use thyme or sage interchably for sauted mushrooms on steaks and it works but i dont think it would work with that recipe. maybe would use herbs de province if i had it on hand and no thyme

    I have found thyme easy to grow, even through a Connecticut winter. Don't just go get some... PLANT some.

    My other herbs, not so much. Tarragon always comes back in the Spring, same with oregano. But neither last thru the winter. And forget about rosemary. If I want fresh rosemary in January, I go to the grocery store.

    Chives are weird. Sometimes I see chives poking up thru the snow. Other times, nothin'.

    Anyway, plant some thyme. Great on garlic toast too. :)

    I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!
