BGE 1st in Houston

edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
My wife has been competition cooking for a year now, she has been cooking her chicken on a home made cooker that I made for her and has done quite well. In September of last year she got her first BGE and has not hit a lick since. Well, this weekend at the Hold'em and Hit'em cookoff in Houston with more than 100 teams she hit a first place chicken and 12th place pork loin. So we now have 3 eggs and I think the pit is being phased out.[p]If you have not been to this cookoff it is one of the best and most fun events we have been to and all for a good cause.

    Sue-B-Que,
Congratulations on the sucessful cook and first place! I'm sure the members of the forum would like to have the recipe that won.
    Thanks

  • Hammer,[p]I don't think I even know the entire recipe, that's TOP SECRET

  • Sue-B-Que,
Congratulations... I live in Spring and the only cookoff I've attended was in Old Town Spring. Tell us more about the Hold'em and Hit'em cookoff, and the winning recipes. Sue-B-Que,[p]Congratulations to your wife!..... 100+ teams is a load of competition and 1st has to feel really good.
Sounds like it took her a little while to get the feel of the ceramic pit but is in a groove now...... welcome to the forum and here's to many more wins![p]John

    Sue-B-Que,
If we can't have the entire recipe, can we have some general info? Whole bird or parts? Direct set-up or indirect? Style sauce? Temp?

  • Gettin one of the cooks to tell all is a dangerous proposition. I started building a new pit for my winter project, I may have to rework a few things and just mount 3 eggs on a trailer.
  • Daddyo,[p]2 half chickens, biggest secret I can give you is to cook hot and fast, 350 degress for about 1hr or 180 degree internal temp
  • Well...guess that answer that old cliche....When Mama is happy... everybody is happy.........or the other way around.

Sue-B-Que,[p]Congratulations! Your win is all the more impressive by doing it in Chicken; a notoriously "ornery" competition entry.[p]Ken

    Sue-B-Que,
I fully understand your statement; 0 explanations necessary. You know how it is"Inquiring minds want to know", so they can try and duplicate what is sucessful, and I was the one who asked for the recipe.
I'm glad however that some of the other folks who have placed high in various competitions have shared with the members of the forum, so we folks who don't compete can try and cook what was sucessful
I wish you and the wife continued sucess in your competitions with the BGE.

  • Hammer,[p]I knew you would understand, I can't begin to count the hours and hours of practice cooking that goes on around our place. The neighbors really love us for all the free Q. That is part of the alure to BBQ cooking, trying this and that until you finally come up with the right combination. And the satisfaction that comes with DIY, then competing with the big boys and girls. I always thought the wife's Q was fantastic, but when you get to taste some of what gets cooked in competition you have to wonder, how'd they do that. Most cooks will share a tid bit of information here and there, and you really can't expect them to share all their secrets. If you have never competed you should search out one of the local competitions and offer to provide your services as a judge, it will do more for your cooking skills than you might expect.[p]Good luck and keep Q'ing
  • Sue-B-Que,
To comply with your approach of not wanting to be part of the BGE family, please be careful when reading others recipes, advice, and techniques to avoid gleaning impormation that may be have been offered as a kind gesture.[p]Just curious....when analyzing your successes, what weight do you give to yourself versus to the equipment?[p]
