The attached link is very long and some think very boring. My suggestion go get a favorite beverage and read on. Not all of the items will you ever get or need , but the idea will help you to plan.

  • One of each in whatever size you get. When you get your second one then do it all again.
  • At least get yourself a platesetter. Then after learning what & how you like to cook, you can decide what else you need/want.

Stones...I know you are torn, and I am not trying to sway you one way or another. But, there are a lot more accessories for the Large than the XL. I will be stunned if you run out of room on the Large. ;) But again, accessories differ from large to XL. I have no experience with the XL....and I am just being honest.... we have never needed THAT much space!!
For the large, accessories I cant do without:

    Platesetter
    Pizza stone
    Spider
    Wok
    Raised Grid
    Third Hand
Propane and Torch for igniting (we use the Guru Golf club and love it) A weedburner also seems to be a favorite.
    OH!!! Welders gloves!!! LOL

Won't be a DANG thing you can't cook with the above!!! ;)
Wishing you the best, large is awesome, but whatever you decide you will love it. :)
  • L/C pretty much hit it on the accessories for the large, I would just add a good instant read thermometer like a Thermapen. :)

Platsetter and a remote thermometer so you don't keep having to pop the lid to check temp. Sure you can rig up something cheaper than platsetter but its so much nicer and easer to have.

You have recieved some great suggestions now go forth and eggify. :woohoo: Tim
  • As a fairly new owner of an XL, I would recommend a digital thermometer first, a plate setter second. I try to limit my accessory purchases to one a month. Last month, it was the vinyl cover (its been raining a good bit here in Georgia thankfully). I purchased a pizza stone as well. I am a relative newbie, so I don't have the collection of accessories that most here do, but I am working on it.
On an unrelated note, I am off to the hospital this morning to get a new hip. I don't know how long that will keep me from egging, but I know I will have withdrawl symptoms.
Good luck on your purchase decision. I, too, faced the same decision. My choice was the XL, but I will mirror the others who say you will be delighted with whatever you choose. I chose the XL because I like the ability to smoke a venison hind quarter and a 40 pound whole hog. I haven't done either yet, but I plan to when I get back on my feet. Until then, I will keep reading and learning

  • Depends on how much you can spend and what kind of cooking you want to do.

Grid lifter-(I use a pair of pliers)
    Ash Tool
Raised Grid - (You can make one with a weber replacement grid and carriage bolts) At a minimum You can use this for cooking chicken over direct heat or, with a drip pan below, use it for indirect cooking until you get a platesetter. (You will still use it after you get your platesetter)
Welders Gloves- or leather work gloves. Good for grilling over high heat or handling hot items.

Thermapen - expensive but worth it. You are cooking to temperature, not time. This instant-read, accurate thermometer will be used on every cook.

Don't get too much to get started. The above list will get you started. Cook for awhile and then see what additional things would improve your experience.

If money and space are no object, get more stuff. But then again, too many toys and a new Egg might create confusion.
