I have a ribeye roast rubbed with Dizzy Pig Cowlick - usually I then coat with olive oil.[p]But hey, there's a lot of collective wisdom here (hmmm, maybe one of the 3:00 am'ers can figure out how many man-years of BBQ experience there is) so my question is:[p]Should I rub my roast with olive oil after the dry rub? Before? Or not at all...[p]Chuck[p]P.S. must confess to being one of the 3:00 am'ers myself :0)

chuckls, if I remember correctly we discussed this last year. If I recall, the answer was something like the answer to "Which came first? The chicken or the egg?" I personally like to rub it first with oil and then apply the rub. Others like to apply the rub and then the oil. I think I have done it both ways and couldn't tell the difference.

  • Wise One,
Since we're both working from memory, and I could be wrong, but I remember that the discussion was over applying mustard first then the rub or the rub first and apply the mustard just before grilling. I, like you, always apply my oil first so the rub sticks. To answer the other part of the debate I wait to add my mustard until just before the cook (if using mustard at all).

Wise One,[p]Well I rubbed with the dry rub first, and then just before putting on the egg I coated with olive oil. There was enough stickem on the roast to hold the rub (again - Dizzy Pig Cowlick) so I put the oil on to keep the moisture in.[p]The roast is on the egg now - nearly ready to come off. I just can't stand how good it smells - good thing I didn't throw an onion onto the coals or I'd be eating that thing tartare![p]If I get enough roundtoit I'll take a couple of pics while it rests and post them...[p]Chuck
