Give The Dog A Bone....?
Rascal

I'm wondering if it would be safe to give a dog a beef rib bone of the kind shown here in recent posts. Any thoughts?

I was always taught to never give dogs bones which have been cooked, as they tend to splinter.

I'm no canine expert, but I don't see why not. The dinosaur ribs that I just posted were way too big to give to our fourth kid, Lucas, picture here in his natural habitat:

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable about dogs will chime in.

My daughter's huskies love me when I give them leftover bones like the ribs, or from a whole picnic. So far, no problems.

my dog gets rib bones, i will take it away if it starts splintering but he will chew on it along time before it gets to that point. he gets the bones from any cut except poultry and hes eaten those as well.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I'm no expert and I throw all my scraps in the ditch out behind the house. I do this everyday and I have never seen a dog or any animal out there choking. :side: Tim
My thoughts are dogs eat a lot of things when we are not looking. -
These are the only bones I give my dogs

Darn Poolman, can I come eat with your dogs??? LOL, those look great!
Rascal, I was always told that cooked bones could splinter and cause major vet bills. Bones like FlaPoolman's from the shank are not likely to splinter like rib and other bones. Check with your vet, they will have the best advise.
Have a great day,

I always make sure to cut the knuckle off before I give my dog the rib bones.

I have asked several vets including 1 at The Auburn Veterinary School and they all say no bones especially poultry bones. They tend to splinter and cause damage to the stomach lining and intestines. Most recently my regular vet was telling me about a case where a bone had become lodged and had to be surgically removed. With that, my dogs don't get bones.
