Does anyone have experience cooking these on the egg?
Normally I peel, slice, batter and fry in butter but I have seen a few stuffed reipes online as well smothered with parmesan cheese and crab meat.
My father-in-law picks these out of his fields for me every fall.
If you have not tasted these they are incredible.

What a memory! My Grandmother used to slice and fry those bad boys. I have never cooked one, but don't know why you couldn't slice them, coat them with EVOO and grill them.
After you understood the consistency after grilling, you could decide about putting "stuff" on top. Stuff = cheese, crab, etc. -
Wow, I haven't seen puff balls since I was a kid. Basically a shroom on roids isn't it. Your guess is as good as mine how to egg it.
-
Yes basically a shroom on steroids. Very very tasty.
If the weather hold out I will fry some up tomorrow night and post some pictures. -
My dad used to slice and fry them. I never ate them. Don't like shroom either. Something about fungus turns me off.

Holy Crap ... never seen, nor heard of a 'puff ball.' If that is a huge mushroom, I'd go find a proportional steak and start cooking! ... So where does one find 'puff balls?'

They are great. I remember as a kid growing up we would get them. Sometimes impressive in size. Sauteed in garlic and butter....mmmm
Not sure where you are from....I am from southern Ontario....they tend to grow in the same patches every year.

Hi Wayne
I am near London and yes they pop up every year in the same fields.
I look forward to this treat every year. -
My family finds them out in their fields every year.
This one was growing in a bean field. -
Somehow, not sure why, but "puff the magic dragon" started to play in my head . . . :woohoo:aka marysvilleksegghead

I have never seen anything like that before. Would like to see it cooked

they are delicious! slice 'em relatively thin and saute with with butter a liitle garlic and parsley flakes and some red pepper.....use white wine to deglaze the pan...add some more wine... and heavy cream... reduce the sauce... toss and serve.... heaven!

My grandmother used to cook them. She would call them poor mans shrooms.
They are great sliced but the do get a little fragile when trying to do anything else with them. One of my favorite things I have done with them is make a mushroom gravy!!! -

I used to get them where I grew up east of Orillia....bout 80 miles north of Toronto.
