Egg Island Design - Help Please

Hello - I currently have my Small in a temporary table and am getting ready to build a kitchen island. This is the basic design from Sketchup:
As you can see, I'm planning to add a Large to the collection. My concern is the backsplash...
I'm planning a 28 - 30" deep counter but do not have a Large to measure with the Lid open. I measured the Small at about 21-22" - can anyone tell me how deep the counter needs to be to ensure that the Large can open completely without hitting the backsplash?
Also planning to set the Egg directly on Granite or Concrete - not sure which yet, any concern there?

Nate, Wow, fantastic looking design. I have two mediums, and I built my table 28" deep. It has and 18" hole for th egg and 5" in front and 5" in the back at the hinge. When the lid is open, the back hinge extends a little over the table edge. I still have 5" in the front of my table, and with the bottom being smaller, you could slide if forward more if you needed. I would think 30" would be good. One thing I like about my table, is that I built in ashpans below the egg so that I can just scrape the ashes out into a pan. Might be cool if you fabricated an ash drawer under each egg.
As for sitting the egg directly on a surface, people do it all the time. I prefer a little airspace under mine however to help cool and keep direct heat off of the surface. I just use the feet that come with the egg. Good luck on your build, I'm sure you will love it. -
for seventy five cents you can put three quarters under the egg to give it a little space so that the bottom stays a little cooler. you wont notice the spacefukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I just went and measured mine with the lid open and the daisy wheel on. With the lid open it appears you will need at least 33 inches possibly 34 to be able to open the lid without the Daisy Wheel touching the backsplash

I would use the feet that come with the egg, gives a little more air flow and matches the egg. I have seen several post that makes me think you should have a heatsink with airflow, I would think the granite would be ok with the feet.

First of all, great design. Now, I want to start checking out auctions to see if I can find some deals on accessories like the burners and built in shelves. Then, I can rebuild my table.
One suggestion, I kept the cutout slab of granite (for the cooktop) when I rebuilt my kitchen. I then had the marble guys smooth out the corners of granite slab and installed that next to my egg. Makes for a nice hot pad area.
Definitely put the egg on the little feet or some other thing to to allow for a heat sink. Otherwise, you may crack the concrete. -

eBay can me hit-or-miss, but the deals are out there if you're patient enough to find them.
