Stoker port forwarding with Apple Airport

i swear i have been able to open a port on my airport extreme to access my stoker over the internet, but can't seem to make it work now.
if there's an airport/stoker user out there, pls help me figure out what i'm doing wrong.
airport extreme/advanced tab
port forwarding tab
service: personal web sharing
public UDP port: blank
public TCP port: 80
private IP address: static address of my stoker
private UDP port: blank
private TCP port: 80
then restart airport, then note public IP address of the router, then use that IP address in browser window of my iphone using 3G
(yes, i know i should be able to control the egg without high tech assistance, i know that port forwarding is a security risk, etc)
thanks

Looks like it should work to me. Ok - great alot of help I am.
I had a problem at one point when I had another webserver running at the same time and it would not work since both servers were trying to run on port 80.
By the way do you have your stoker connected directly to your Airport Extreme Router? If so you may want to just send a ping to the IP address to make sure it is connecting. Sometimes cables can go bad, also ethernet ports on a switch/router can go bad.. Worth a try. -
any luck? I was going to attempt this as well. If not, I will just stick with email update every 30mins.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

I got it to work last night. I did exactly what you posted. Now, to access the stoker from outside your local network you need to type in http:// the ip address our your router (WAN) not your stoker. The WAN IP is the only one that is specific to you (your router in this case) on the WWW. Once you hit that, the router will do its job and forward you to the Stoker Web Interface. Hope this helps.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

I'm trying to do this, and my Base station (Airport Extreme) will not allow me to change more than the last set of digits on the AE's IP address. Can someone help me figure out why it won't let me fill in the whole IP address?
-
The ip address of my AE is something like 10.0.1.2
Does that look similar to yours?
Mark -
My Airport Extreme does, but the Airport Express is 169.254.XXX.134
-
I have this so jacked up now my Airport express (brand new BTW) isn't even visible to Airport Utility unless I hardwire it into my MB Pro.
-
You need to plug in (to the AC) the Airport Express, and using a paperclip, do a hard reset on the AE. Then you will be able to see it on your Airport Utility.
In the Airport Utility, you must put that AE into WDS mode. Once that is done, you can enter the id number of the AE into your Airport Extreme. Use the info above to configure the Extreme.
Then you are done!
Mark -
I can't get it to save the configuration on the Airport Express (BTW - when you're using AE, I think you always mean Express, not the Airport Extreme, right?), because it has a variety of other settings it wants, but now I can't see them because to see the internet I'm needing to log off the Airport Express and back onto the base station to see the Internet to come here and post. God I'm having a hell of a time.
-
Mark - I've now got my Mac Mini logged into the airport express, and am keeping the MBP logged intot eh Base Station so i can see the Internet.
The failures I'm getting when I try and update the AE are:
1 - Wants a base station password (I think for the Airport Express, doesn't like I've left as default
2 - Wants a WDS Node - Do I give it the Airport extreme's WDS ID?
3 - Wants to know if I want SNMP over WAN
4 - wants to know if I want to allow setup over WAN
If there's a way I can call you (assuming you have time), or could iChat or something, it'd be a huge help -
Can you devote the AE (yes, when I write AE I'm always referring to Airport Express) to Stoker duty? Your MBP should get its internet connection from the Airport Extreme.
After doing a hard reset on the AE, your Airport utility should read it as a new AE in need of being set up.
At that point, this thread should guide you through the remainder of the setup.

Sorry, now's not a good time for me - I'm watching the kids on my own and taking care of dinner/clean-up.
Mark -
Mark - Totally understand, been there, still doing that.
Here's what seems to be the problem. In setting up the AE to be ready to go WDS its asking for a WDS peer. I think it wants the Base Station (Airport Extreme's) ID (Not IP Address), so I'm giving it that, and then telling it to ignore the other 'problems' it says it has (base station password for itself, SNMP, setup over WAN). The problem is that when I go to the Extreme after the Express comes back up, and I try to tell it to set up a WDS network, it loses sight of the Interet, and I get totally knocked off line (that was me you heard cursing a few minutes ago). Seems like I have a chicken and Egg issue.
I'm about to upload a bunch of pic's of the screens I'm seeing on the Airport express to confirm I've got it right. -
What I'm seeing on the Express:
-
Here's what the Extreme shows once I set it to WDS
Still getting a yellow light on the Extreme base station, but apparently I'm on the internet, sending this. -
It looks to me like you are using your Airport Express as a router (it has an internet ip address). Your Airport Extreme does not appear on the left hand margin, either.
I suggest taking the Airport Express offline (unplug it).
Then get your Airport Extreme up and running as your base station (you should have only 1 base station).
Then plug your Airport Express back in, do a hard reset, and put it in WDS mode.
I think the problem is that you are setting up 2 base stations and trying to put them both in WDS mode.
Mark -
I think we're onto something (Thank you), when I set it up upon restart, do i do it manual, or let it assist?
I ask because I did it manual, and I didn't see an option to tell it not to be a base station, so i hadn't noticed that.
Did I mention, Thank You? -
I would set it up in manual mode, since you know exactly what you want it to be doing.
I think you should also remove the ethernet cable from the Airport Express. Just plug it into the AC, and get it connected wirelessly to the Airport Extreme.
I'm happy if this helps you to get your network configured. I hope you are having some success.
Mark -
This is hopeless. As soon as I think I have the Airport Express set up, it tells me it's good, and then the light goes yellow and it disappears from the Airport Utility. I frankly cannot get it to set up as anything but a base station I think. I so want this to work, and am getting horribly frustrated.
-
I can't take it any more.
I cannot seem to figure out how to tell the Express to configure itself as anything other than a base station, and on the rare time I seem to have it accepting it's role as connecting to another network, and still running and in the green, as soon as I tell the Extreme to configure as a WDS rather than 'create a wireless network' it (the Extreme) dies on me and disappears.
I am so frustrated. i had a really rotten week, and this was going to be my saving grace was that the Stoker showed up and I thought I had all the pieces in place to get this running. I'm 3.5 hours into this, and everywhere I'm turning it's failing. I have no clue how to get out of this.
Sorry to vent, but I'm unaccustomed to anything Mac being this difficult. Like you said, it usually "just works" but this is nowhere near that level of convenience. -
Darn!
What I have called a base station should really be the router (the Airport Extreme). The AE is a remote station.
Why don't you change gears? Have you looked at this Apple help for setting up a WDS network? I believe this is for the Tiger OS, but it is close enough that it should get you going.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2044
In step 7 when you click + to find your Airport Express, if your Express does not show up, do the hard reset on it again, and it should appear.
Mark -
Okay, I'm making progress, I think. I discovered that the Airport ID I was inputting for the base station (was inputting in the express) was wrong. Turns out 8's and B's look a lot alike. Grrrrr........
So, now I have two green lights (express and extreme, but the Express is only visible when I plug it in hardwired to the MBP. I get the impression express and extreme are actually talking, but that I cannot see the express in the Airport utility w/o hardwiring it.
Ideas hat might be amiss? I reall wish that Apple help page was current. It helps some, but not completely. Understanding the main/remote part though helped me get past that issue. -
Have you tried removing the ethernet cable from the Express and done a hard reset?
When it is not visible to Airport Utility wirelessly, it is not properly assigned to your network.
Now that the Extreme is working and you have discovered one problem source, try resetting the Express with no ethernet cable to the MBP. Your Utility will pick it up and you can finish the setup.
Although that article is for Tiger OS, it should be similar under Leopard.
Mark -
I can't take this any more, 6 hours is my limit. I cannot seem to get the two to play nicely. I just pray to god I haven't flushed all this $$ down the toilet to try an have this ability. I'm sorry to be so disgruntled, but this is d@mn insane that it should be this difficult to get two Apple products to talk to each other. I know I can do this with hardwire (the stoker to the laptop), but the whole reason I spent extra money was so that this would be a wireless setup. I know for sure now that Stoker's going to probably come out with a wireless version of this in days, and then I'm going to throw this whole thing off a cliff.
I am so mad.
Sorry, I think I'm just worn out. rotten week, followed by a rotten Friday night. sux.
Now I know I'm not going to be able to sleep either. Means I'll still be grumpy in the AM. Damn I wish Apple made this WDS thing easier. Everything I've read on the Internet (now it's too late) talks about how random this can be.
