I`ve been doing a lot of research on the forum for cooking a prime rib, and the concensus is roughly 300°-350° indirect. My dilema is that I will have to use my small egg due to transportaion reasons, and am concerned that I wont be able to get enough on it if I have to go indirect. Does anyone have experience with how big of a roast I can fit on the small..and better yet, has anyone done them "direct" which would allow me to get a larger or possibly 2 roasts on the small guy at once. I`m gonna be cooking for 6 adults and several children. I have a 3 bone 6#`r that I`m gonna do a test run with, but if the concesus says indirect I will need to start working on a setup for that to also use on the test run. Any advice would be appreciated, as we all know these things aint cheap.[p]

<p />WessB,[p]Hmmm . . . a 6 lb prime rib on the Small . . . hmmmm.[p]The picture above is of two 4.5 lb prime rib roasts I just did this past week on the Medium. With an indirect setup, the space issue that you have really comes down to the interference between the temperature probe (which needs to be sticking out of the top of the roast) and the inside top of your dome. In order to do the cook pictured above, I had to remove the firering. I then put the BGE ceramic feet on the fire ring and the platesetter on those feet with the platesetter feet up, and a cooking grid on the platesetter feet (with drip pan underneath). [p]The only way I can see this working on your Small if you go with an indirect setup is to do the same thing I did - i.e., take out your fire ring. I suppose you could do direct if you lowered the cooking temp and elevated your cooking grid - oh, but then you're just into the same problems again.[p]Take out your fire ring and see how much room you have - it might work that way.[p]TRex

Oops, I meant to say:[p]"I then put the BGE ceramic feet on the fire BOX . . . "[p]In other words, the fire ring was removed completely and not used.[p]TRex
  • Morning Wess,[p]Your small Egg will cook up to about 12-14 pounds of prime rib at one time either direct or indirect but maybe not in one piece. I will send some details with some pictures later in the day.[p]Dave
