Large Egg vs Medium Egg

edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
My sisters and I want to buy my father a Big Green Egg for his 65th birthday. He loves to grill and smoke (esp. eel). However, he rarely cooks for more than 10 people at a time. We don't know what size to get. Also, what accesories do we need to include? (ie nest...) Can anyone help?

3sisters,[p]I would go for thw large. It will give the most options. He'll love it once he tries it.[p]I would recommend a table or at the least, shevles on each side. Either works well, the added space is very helpful.

3sisters,[p]This question comes up on this forum quite a lot. I recommend the Large & have never read where anyone said anything different. You will be very happy with a large & glad you made the wise decision.[p] Dave

    3sisters,
Although many here will insist the large is the way to go, a few of us went medium and have no regrets.
Check out the link for some medium possibilities.

3sisters, I have both a large and a medium and use the large probably 80% of the time even when cooking for just two of us. He could get by on a medium but he will thrive on a large. as far as accessories go, I would add the platesetter and pizza stone (yes both) as this makes it wonderful for breads, pizza or just simple indirect cooks (with drip pan underneath). If he does not already have one, get him a good theromometer. A polder type is nice, an instant read is even nicer. He also needs some type of tool to handle the grill when it is hot (a grill lifter is OK, The Lawn Ranger's grill lifter is even more special). [p]Get him everything he needs. You'll love the food when you visit. And if no one else has said it, "You are good daughters."

  • 3sisters,[p]Congratulations on being awesome daughters. Most posters on the board would tell you that your father would be just as happy with either a medium or large and possible give the large a nod because of the slightly larger capacity.[p]One point that you may want to consider is the weight. I don’t have a medium, but moving a large around can be quite a workout. It’s physical size and weight can make it extremely challenging to move around or place in a nest if he doesn’t have a helper. I don’t think that most people move their eggs around as much as I do so this may not really be an issue. I imagine that the medium would be considerably easier to move and position if there isn’t anyone around to lend a hand.
