napkin or towel and oil trick question
RRP
Posts: 26,455
wouldn't you know now that stike has gone underground I have started using the twisted napkin or towel trick with oil to light my lump. I never paid much attention to those threads so I'm eggperimenting with what oil to use. To date I've tried veggie, canola, grapeseed, peanut, corn and olive oil. Can't say that they have all worked well, but we've had some wet weather so that may have been a factor. Has anybody figured out the best oil for the lowest flash-point...I assume we want the oil that ignites easiest. My worst performer has been peanut oil.

What is ever cheapest.

I started with the grapeseed oil since I noticed it had expired 2 years ago, but doesn't smell rancid. Perhaps you're being kind and saying any food safe oil is acceptable?Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

The only thing that matters is that it burns away. I would not suggest 10W30.

I used EVOO tonight as a test of the paper towel method. It was the first time I tried it and it worked well. I usually use a MAPP torch. I used EVOO since it was all I had.

I started using the oldest oil I had, then outdated peanut oil, now a store brand vegetable oil, 48 oz. for 2 bucks. Cheapest works....Flame on.LBGE Katy (Houston) TX

kerosene oil works well too..............

Been lighting with EVOO for last 6 months or so. Use EVOO only because its in a a bottle with one of those drizzle thingies on top. Don't need much. Recently been using cardboard egg containers - works well.

I imagine anything that you can use in a wok (like grapeseed oil) would have a high flashpoint and not work so well. I have had great luck with Vegetable oil, olive oil and EVOO.
Bad luck with Canola oil which I do not recommend. -
any oil, even canola.
most folks think that because there's a little oil involved, then a whole lot would be better. the oil isn't what burns, and it ain't the paper either. it's the two together. i know it sounds stupid. but it's true.
two napkins side by side with 5 zig zags back and forth is enough.
it shouldn't drip...
even twisted tight it shouldn't drip -
I save and use my used oil from frying. Usually canola or grapeseed, both high flashpoint oils.
A light dose and it works fine.

I used EVOO and it worked well. Then I got smart and upgraded to MAPP Gas torch.
