Charcoal to use?

I got some Big Green Egg charcoal with my egg ... are there other brands I should try or should I just get the same stuff?

  • Same stuff is good, I like Maple Leaf but thats here in Canada...check out the Naked Whiz's charcoal database he rates all the charcoals.
  • Here in southern california BGE lump is more than $30 per bag. Royal Oak (red bag made in USA) from wall mart or restaraunt depot is popular and much less expensive.
  • Depending on where you live you should be able to find other brands if you would like to try some. Many supermarkets carry lump charcoal under their own name, but much of it comes from Royal Oak, the same company that makes the BGE lump. Harris Teeter sells lump charcoal that comes from Nature's Grilling. Wal*Mart in various regions of the country has sold Royal Oak lump and I saw a local Kmart near me sold Royal Oak Steakhouse lump charcoal. Ace Hardware near me carries Cowboy lump charcoal and either Lowes or Home Depot does also. So look around and you should find other brands to try. Good luck!

  • The easiest to find in many parts of the country are Royal Oak (Walmart) and Cowboy (Lowes and Ace Hardware). Ozark Oak and Wicked Good are brands that people seem to really like. Check out The Naked Whiz's website for reviews of many brands.
  • As Naked said many stores carry their own brand that is made by Royal Oak; I am very happy with Kroger brand so far, to me it is identical to Royal Oak as far as the size of the chunks and lack of ash. R.oak is about impossible to find around here anymore and I am not paying for BGE anymore; the only real difference to me is that the BGE has many LARGE chunks which is not such a big deal to me anyway so why pay $30 when you can pay $7 or $8 or less?
