<p />I tried something different yesterday on the rub I put on my butt.[p]I mixed a rub I put together from Smoke N Spice and added mustard to it, then applied it to the butt instead of coating it with mustard then adding the rub. Seemed to work pretty good. Anyone else ever done that?[p]#2 ring for 14 hours so far. Right at that 225 mark.[p]Happy Sunday.[p]Mick

MickeyT,[p]Hey there MT. Yes a long time ago the "old guard" used to talk about the very same thing. The reccomendations were to use the very cheapest mustard you could. We do our shoulders and butts with a mustard and rub coating all the time . . . almost without thinking. Adds a nice tang to the bark. My wife hates mustard and even she agrees it tastes pretty good. ie, no mustard taste, just a tang.
  • MickeyT,
Just experimenting with the mustard rub mix on a shoulder myself. I have used the mustard rub on beef with good results, so I decided to try it on a couple of shoulders today.[p]I mix up plain mustard, fresh garlic, anchovy paste, pepper, crushed red pepper, cardamon, powdered star anise, Old Bay Seasoning, Italian herbs, olive oil, and garlic Rice Vinegar. I put all the igredients in a small food processor and blend. I slathered it on a couple of shoulders, added Turbinado sugar, and I'll know tomorrow night if it beats the tried and true 2 step method of regular mustard and then adding my variation of JJ's rub.[p]Mike in MN
