BGE Spring Assembly

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum

I am in the process of trying to safely remove the bands from my Large BGE,and replace the original gasket with a Nomex gasket. The instructions that I have said to replace the white plastic retainers for safety so as not to get injured.

My problem is that the wp retainer will not line up with the bolt heads on the spring assembly. They are about a 1/2 bolthead off.

My ? is "what is a safe method of holding down this retaining spring"?

Thank you

  • Use a few zip ties will work. The retainers should fit. Maybe a little manipulation to get them on.

Back when I was totally Eggstreme and my lg went with me every weekend. I would just loosen the lower band bolt and then hold the hinge in one hand and the handle/bottom band with the other hand and lift it off slowly. If you have mates then it is a little trickier. I would set it down on my big lump rubbermade container.

    Zip ties wouldn't hurt though.

I've taken mine apart a couple of times. I do not have the white clips that came with the egg. One time I did use zip ties & that method worked fine. The other times I just removed the springs prior to disassembly. (It helps to raise the lid as you remove them - Raising the lid reduces the tension.) I found the easiest way for me was to remove the springs.

I had the same problem when I went to change my gasket. The white plastic pieces would not fit. I bought some plastic cable ties at Radio Shack and they worked fine.

As you can see there are a lot of solutions available.

For me, I just loosen the top band and ask my wife to hold the band while I remove the dome.

Let the hinge open the band and loosen the lower band and remove the assembly.

If you use this method do not let the band twist and torque.

I assemble in the reverse manner. Works great.

My second choice would be zip ties at the hing area.

  • Thanks to everyone for their help/suggestions. I am new to this forum and over-did my posting - twice. I think I will try the nylon ties route first. J have read so much about these springs that I did not want one upside the head or even a jawbreaker. Thanks again for your help.
